Matilda said, “Grown-ups do it too, mummy. I saw you doing it yesterday in the kitchen.”

“That's quite enough from you,” Mrs Wormwood said, turning pink.
“너, 그쯤 해 두지 못해!” 웜우드 부인이 얼굴을 붉히며 말했다.
Mr Wormwood had to keep his hat on all through supper in front of the television. He looked ridiculous and he stayed very silent.
웜우드 씨는 텔레비전 앞에서 저녁을 먹는 내내 모자를 쓰고 있어야 했다. 그는 우스꽝스러워 보였고, 내내 입을 꾹 다물고 있었다.
When he went up to bed he tried again to get the thing off, and so did his wife, but it wouldn't budge.
잠자리에 들 시간에도 그는 모자를 벗으려고 다시 애를 썼고, 아내 역시 거들었지만 모자는 꿈쩍도 하지 않았다.
“How am I going to have my shower?” he demanded. “You'll just have to do without it, won't you,” his wife told him.
“샤워는 어떻게 하라는 거야?” 그가 따지듯 묻자, 아내가 대답했다. “그냥 샤워 안 하면 되잖아요, 안 그래요?”
And later on, as she watched her skinny little husband skulking around the bedroom in his purple-striped pyjamas with a pork-pie hat on his head,
잠시 후, 보라색 줄무늬 파자마 차림에 포크 파이 햇을 쓰고 침실을 쭈뼛거리며 돌아다니는 비쩍 마른 남편을 보며,
she thought how stupid he looked. Hardly the kind of man a wife dreams about, she told herself.
부인은 남편이 참으로 한심해 보인다고 생각했다. ‘꿈에 그리던 남편감과는 거리가 멀어도 한참 멀군,’ 부인은 속으로 중얼거렸다.
Mr Wormwood discovered that the worst thing about having a permanent hat on his head was having to sleep in it.
모자가 머리에 영구적으로 붙어 버렸을 때 가장 끔찍한 점은, 잘 때도 모자를 쓰고 자야 한다는 사실임을 웜우드 씨는 깨달았다.
It was impossible to lie comfortably on the pillow.
베개를 베고 편안하게 눕는 것은 불가능했다.
“Now do stop fussing around,” his wife said to him after he had been tossing and turning for about an hour.
그가 한 시간 가까이 이리저리 뒤척이자 아내가 쏘아붙였다. “이제 그만 좀 부산스럽게 굴어요.”
“I expect it will be loose by the morning and then it'll slip off easily.” But it wasn't loose by the morning and it wouldn't slip off.
“아침이면 접착력이 약해져서 쉽게 쏙 빠질 테니까요.” 하지만 아침이 되어도 모자는 느슨해지지 않았고, 벗겨지지도 않았다.
So Mrs Wormwood took a pair of scissors and cut the thing off his head, bit by bit, first the top and then the brim.
결국 웜우드 부인은 가위를 가져와 모자 윗부분부터 챙까지 조금씩 잘라 내기 시작했다.
