과거 회상이 끝나고 다시 현재로 돌아왔습니다. 앞서 나왔던, 오베가 의자를 걷어차고 허공에 매달린 그 긴박한 찰나의 순간에서 이야기가 다시 시작됩니다.
They say the brain functions quicker while it’s falling.
사람들은 추락하는 동안에는 뇌가 더 빠르게 작동한다고 말한다.
As if the sudden explosion of kinetic energy forces the mental faculties to accelerate
갑자기 폭발한 운동 에너지가 정신 능력을 가속화하여,
until the perception of the exterior world goes into slow motion.
외부 세계에 대한 인식이 슬로 모션처럼 느껴질 때까지 말이다.
So Ove had time to think of many different things.
덕분에 오베는 여러 가지 다양한 것들을 생각할 시간을 가졌다.
Mainly radiators. Because there are right and wrong ways of doing things, as we all know.
주로 라디에이터에 관한 생각이었다. 우리 모두 알다시피, 일에는 옳은 방식과 그른 방식이 있는 법이니까.
And even though it was many years ago and Ove could no longer remember exactly what solution he’d considered to be the right one
비록 수년 전의 일이라 오베 자신도 어떤 해결책이 옳다고 생각했었는지 정확히 기억나지는 않았지만,
in the argument about which central heating system should be adopted by the Residents’ Association,
주택 관리위원회에서 어떤 중앙난방 시스템을 채택할지를 두고 벌인 논쟁에서 말이다.
he did remember very clearly that Rune’s approach to it had been wrong. But it wasn’t just the central heating system.

Rune and Ove had known one another for almost forty years, and they had been at loggerheads for at least thirty-seven of them.

Ove could not in all honesty remember how it all started.
