“Everybody watch!” he cried. And summoning all his strength, he threw himself into the air, headfirst.

Templeton grinned. Charlotte just sat quietly. After a bit she spoke.
템플턴은 히죽거렸고, 샬롯은 그저 조용히 앉아 있었어요. 잠시 후 샬롯이 입을 열었답니다.
“You can’t spin a web, Wilbur, and I advise you to put the idea out of your mind. You lack two things needed for spinning a web.”
“윌버, 넌 거미줄을 짤 수 없어. 그러니 그런 생각은 아예 머릿속에서 지우는 게 좋겠어. 넌 거미줄을 짜는 데 필요한 두 가지가 부족하거든.”
“What are they?” asked Wilbur, sadly. “You lack a set of spinnerets, and you lack know-how.”
“그게 뭔데?” 윌버가 슬프게 물었어요. “넌 실젖도 없고, 방법도 모르잖아.”
“But cheer up, you don’t need a web. Zuckerman supplies you with three big meals a day. Why should you worry about trapping food?”
“하지만 기운 내. 넌 거미줄이 필요 없으니까. 저커먼 아저씨가 하루에 세 번이나 푸짐한 식사를 챙겨 주시잖니. 직접 먹이를 잡으려고 애쓸 필요가 전혀 없다고.”
Wilbur sighed. “You’re ever so much cleverer and brighter than I am, Charlotte. I guess I was just trying to show off. Serves me right.”
윌버가 한숨을 내쉬었어요. “샬롯, 넌 나보다 훨씬 영리하고 똑똑해. 내가 그냥 잘난 척을 하려다 이 꼴이 된 것 같아. 꼴좋게 됐지 뭐.”
Serves me right은 자업자득이다 혹은 당해도 싸다라는 뜻으로, 자신의 어리석은 행동을 뉘우칠 때 쓰는 표현입니다.
Templeton untied his string and took it back to his home. Charlotte returned to her weaving.
템플턴은 끈을 풀어서 자기 집으로 가져갔어요. 샬롯은 다시 거미줄을 짜기 시작했지요.
“You needn’t feel too badly, Wilbur,” she said. “Not many creatures can spin webs.”
“윌버, 너무 속상해하지 마.” 샬롯이 말했어요. “거미줄을 짤 수 있는 생명체는 그리 많지 않단다.”
“Even men aren’t as good at it as spiders, although they think they’re pretty good, and they’ll try anything.”
“심지어 인간들도 거미만큼 거미줄을 잘 짜지 못해. 자기들이 꽤 잘한다고 생각하면서 이것저것 시도하긴 하지만 말이야.”
“Did you ever hear of the Queensborough Bridge?” Wilbur shook his head.
“너 퀸즈버러 다리라고 들어본 적 있니?” 윌버는 고개를 가로저었어요.
