The family was sitting around, watching the final episode of M*A*S*H, and I’ll never forget it even though I was very young.
온 가족이 모여 앉아 ‘매시(M*A*S*H)’의 마지막 에피소드를 보던 때였는데, 아주 어렸을 때였지만 절대 잊을 수가 없어.
매시(M*A*S*H)는 한국 전쟁을 배경으로 한 미군 야전 병원 의료진들의 이야기를 다룬 전설적인 시트콤 겸 드라마입니다. 1983년에 방영된 마지막 에피소드는 미국 TV 역사상 가장 높은 시청률을 기록한 단일 방송으로 남아 있을 정도로 엄청난 화제였습니다.
My mom was crying. My sister was crying. My brother was using every ounce of strength he had not to cry.
엄마는 울고 계셨고, 누나도 울고 있었어. 형은 울지 않으려고 온 힘을 다해 버티고 있었지.
And my dad left during one of the final moments to make a sandwich.
그런데 거의 끝날 무렵에 아빠가 샌드위치를 만들겠다며 자리를 뜨셨어.
Now, I don’t remember much about the program itself because I was too young,
너무 어릴 때라 프로그램 내용 자체는 사실 잘 기억나지 않아.
but my dad never left to make a sandwich except during commercial breaks, and then he usually just sent my mom.
하지만 우리 아빠는 광고 시간 말고는 샌드위치를 만들러 주방에 가시는 법이 없었거든. 평소에는 보통 엄마를 시키곤 하셨지.
I walked to the kitchen, and I saw my dad making a sandwich… and crying.
내가 주방으로 가봤더니, 아빠가 샌드위치를 만들면서... 울고 계셨어.
He was crying harder than even my mom. And I couldn’t believe it.
엄마보다 훨씬 더 서럽게 우시더라고. 난 정말 내 눈을 믿을 수가 없었어.
When he finished making his sandwich, he put away the things in the refrigerator and stopped crying and wiped his eyes and saw me.
샌드위치를 다 만드신 아빠는 냉장고에 재료들을 정리하더니 울음을 그치고 눈을 닦으셨어. 그러다 나를 보게 되신 거야.
Then, he walked up, patted my shoulder, and said, “This is our little secret, okay, champ?” “Okay,” I said.
아빠는 다가와서 내 어깨를 다독이며 말씀하셨어. “이건 우리 둘만의 비밀이다, 알았지, 우리 대장?” “네,” 내가 대답했지.
여기서 우리 대장(champ)은 아버지가 아들을 다정하게 부를 때 사용하는 애칭입니다. 평소 무뚝뚝하고 현실적인 아빠가 어린 찰리에게만 자신의 약한 모습(눈물)을 보여주고 유대감을 형성하는 매우 감동적인 대목입니다.
And Dad picked me up with the arm that wasn’t holding the sandwich,
그러고는 아빠가 샌드위치를 들지 않은 다른 쪽 팔로 나를 번쩍 들어 올리셨어.
and carried me to the room that had the television, and put me on his lap for the rest of the television episode.
나를 안고 TV가 있는 방으로 가시더니, 남은 방송 시간 동안 나를 무릎 위에 앉혀 주셨어.
At the end of the episode, he picked me up, turned off the TV, and turned around.
에피소드가 끝나자 아빠는 나를 안아 올리셨고, TV를 끈 뒤 몸을 돌리셨어.
