They blow up bad guys. They yell at their detectives. They do interviews for magazines.

Every time I see this one particular movie star on a magazine,
잡지에 나오는 그 특정한 배우를 볼 때마다,
I can’t help but feel terribly sorry for her because nobody respects her at all, and yet they keep interviewing her.
난 그녀가 너무 가엽다는 생각이 들어. 아무도 그녀를 존중하지 않는데, 사람들은 계속해서 그녀를 인터뷰하잖아.
화려한 스타의 삶을 동경하기보다, 대중의 구경거리가 된 배우의 내면적 고독을 먼저 살피는 찰리의 섬세한 공감 능력이 돋보이는 대목입니다.
And the interviews all say the same thing. They start with what food they are eating in some restaurant.
인터뷰 내용은 항상 똑같아. 어느 식당에서 어떤 음식을 먹고 있는지부터 시작하지.
“As ___ gingerly munched her Chinese Chicken Salad, she spoke of love.”
“___가 차이니즈 치킨 샐러드를 조심스럽게 오물거릴 때, 그녀는 사랑에 대해 이야기했다.”
차이니즈 치킨 샐러드는 당시 미국 잡지 인터뷰에서 연예인들이 건강하고 가벼운 식사를 한다는 점을 강조하기 위해 자주 등장하던 클리셰 같은 메뉴입니다.
And all the covers say the same thing: “___ gets to the bottom of stardom, love, and his/her hit new movie/television show/album.”
잡지 표지도 다 똑같은 소리뿐이야. “___, 스타의 삶과 사랑, 그리고 화제의 신작 영화/TV 쇼/앨범의 모든 것을 밝히다.”
I think it’s nice for stars to do interviews to make us think they are just like us,
스타들이 인터뷰를 통해 자신들도 우리와 똑같은 사람이라는 걸 보여주는 건 좋다고 생각해.
but to tell you the truth, I get the feeling that it’s all a big lie.
하지만 솔직히 말하면, 그게 다 커다란 거짓말 같다는 느낌이 들어.
The problem is I don’t know who’s lying. And I don’t know why these magazines sell as much as they do.
문제는 누가 거짓말을 하고 있는지 모른다는 거야. 그리고 이런 잡지들이 왜 그렇게 많이 팔리는지도 모르겠어.
And I don’t know why the ladies in the dentist’s office like them as much as they do.
치과에 있는 아주머니들이 왜 이 잡지들을 그렇게 좋아하는지도 이해가 안 가.
A Saturday ago, I was in the dentist’s office, and I heard this conversation.
지난 토요일에 치과에 갔을 때 이런 대화를 들었어.
