1장
로이스 로리의 사중주 중 두 번째 이야기인 파랑 채집가(Gathering Blue)가 시작됩니다. 전작과는 다른 분위기의 척박하고 원시적인 공동체를 배경으로 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
“Mother?” There was no reply. She hadn’t expected one.
“어머니?” 대답은 없었다. 그녀도 대답을 기대한 것은 아니었다.
Her mother had been dead now for four days, and Kira could tell that the last of the spirit was drifting away.
어머니가 죽은 지 이제 나흘이 되었고, 키라는 영혼의 마지막 조각이 떠나가고 있음을 느낄 수 있었다.
이 이야기의 주인공인 키라(Kira)가 처음 등장합니다. 선천적으로 다리가 불편한 소녀이지만, 매우 강인한 정신력을 지닌 인물로 묘사됩니다.
“Mother.” She said it again, quietly, to whatever was leaving.
“어머니.” 키라는 떠나가는 그 무엇을 향해 나직하게 다시 한번 불렀다.
She thought that she could feel its leave-taking, the way one could feel a small whisper of breeze at night.
키라는 밤에 부는 아주 가느다란 미풍을 느끼듯, 영혼이 작별을 고하는 것을 느낄 수 있다고 생각했다.
Now she was all alone. Kira felt the aloneness, the uncertainty, and a great sadness.
이제 그녀는 완전히 혼자가 되었다. 키라는 고립감과 불확실성, 그리고 거대한 슬픔을 느꼈다.
This had been her mother, the warm and vital woman whose name had been Katrina.
이 시신은 한때 따뜻하고 활기 넘쳤던 그녀의 어머니, 카트리나였다.
Then after the brief and unexpected sickness, it had become the body of Katrina, still containing the lingering spirit.
갑작스럽고 짧은 병치레 끝에 그녀는 아직 미련이 남은 영혼을 품은 카트리나의 육신이 되었다.
After four sunsets and sunrises, the spirit, too, was gone. It was simply a body.
네 번의 일출과 일몰이 지나자 영혼마저 떠나버렸다. 이제 그것은 그저 시신일 뿐이었다.
이곳 사람들은 죽은 후 나흘 동안 영혼이 육신 곁에 머문다고 믿으며, 그 기간이 지나야 비로소 완전한 죽음으로 받아들입니다.
Diggers would come and sprinkle a layer of soil over the flesh,
매장꾼들이 와서 육신 위에 흙 한 겹을 뿌려주겠지만,
but even so it would be eaten by the clawing, hungry creatures that came at night.
설령 그렇다 해도 밤마다 찾아오는 배고픈 짐승들이 날카로운 발톱으로 헤집어 시신을 뜯어 먹을 터였다.
시신을 정중히 매장하지 않고 들판에 방치하여 짐승의 먹이가 되게 하는 이 사회의 비정하고 거친 생존 방식을 엿볼 수 있습니다.
Then the bones would scatter, rot, and crumble to become part of the earth.
그러고 나면 뼈들은 흩어지고 썩어 문드러져 흙의 일부가 될 것이다.
