Lily was deep in thought. “What if they give the little twin a name Elsewhere, a name like, oh, maybe Jonathan?

And here, in our community, at his naming, the twin that we kept here is given the name Jonathan,

and then there would be two children with the same name, and they would look exactly the same,
“그러면 이름도 같고 생김새도 똑같은 아이가 둘이 되는 거잖아요.”
and someday, maybe when they were a Six, one group of Sixes would go to visit another community on a bus,
“그러다 언젠가 그 애들이 6살이 되었을 때, 6살 집단이 버스를 타고 다른 공동체로 견학을 가는 거예요.”
and there in the other community, in the other group of Sixes, would be a Jonathan who was exactly the same as the other Jonathan,
“그런데 그쪽 공동체 6살 집단에 이쪽 조나단이랑 똑같이 생긴 조나단이 있는 거죠.”
and then maybe they would get mixed up and take the wrong Jonathan home,
“그러다 어쩌면 서로 뒤섞여서 엉뚱한 조나단을 집으로 데려올지도 몰라요.”
and maybe his parents wouldn’t notice, and then—” She paused for breath.
“부모님도 눈치채지 못할 수도 있고요, 그러면—” 아이는 숨을 몰아쉬려 말을 멈췄다.
“Lily,” Mother said, “I have a wonderful idea. Maybe when you become a Twelve, they’ll give you the Assignment of Storyteller!
“릴리,” 어머니가 말했다. “정말 멋진 생각이구나. 네가 12살이 되면 ‘이야기꾼’ 직위를 받게 될지도 모르겠어!”

I don’t think we’ve had a Storyteller in the community for a long time. But if I were on the Committee, I would definitely choose you for that job!”

Lily grinned. “I have a better idea for one more story,” she announced.

“What if actually we were all twins and didn’t know it, and so Elsewhere there would be another Lily,
“만약 사실 우리가 다 쌍둥이인데 그걸 모르고 있는 거라면 어떡해요? 그래서 외부 세계에는 또 다른 릴리가 있고,”
and another Jonas, and another Father, and another Asher, and another Chief Elder, and another—”
“또 다른 조너스 오빠랑, 또 다른 아빠랑, 또 다른 애셔랑, 또 다른 수석 원로랑, 또 다른 누군가가 있을 수도 있잖아요—”
