“Eat my cookie,” he said. Stanley was glad to see Mr. Pendanski coming toward them, along with Zero.
“내 쿠키나 처먹어.” 그가 말했다. 그때 제로와 함께 펜단스키 선생님이 이쪽으로 오는 것을 보고 스탠리는 안도의 한숨을 내쉬었다.
“Hi, Mom,” said Armpit. “We were just fooling around.” “I saw what was going on,” Mr. Pendanski said.
“안녕하세요, 엄마.” 암핏이 말했다. “우린 그냥 장난치고 있었어요.” “무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는지 다 봤다.” 펜단스키 선생님이 말했다.
He turned to Stanley. “Go ahead, Stanley,” he said. “Hit him back. You’re bigger.”
그는 스탠리에게 고개를 돌렸다. “어서 해봐, 스탠리. 너도 똑같이 때려줘. 네가 덩치도 더 크잖니.”
교육자로서 싸움을 말려야 할 상담원이 오히려 폭력을 권장하는 모습에서, 이 캠프의 비정상적인 분위기가 고스란히 드러납니다.
Stanley stared at Mr. Pendanski in astonishment. “Teach the bully a lesson,” said Mr. Pendanski.
스탠리는 깜짝 놀라 펜단스키 선생님을 쳐다보았다. “저 골칫덩이한테 본때를 보여줘라.” 펜단스키 선생님이 말했다.
Zigzag hit Stanley on the shoulder with his open hand. “Teach me a lesson,” he challenged.
지그재그가 손바닥으로 스탠리의 어깨를 쳤다. “어디 본때를 보여줘 봐.” 그가 도발했다.
Stanley made a feeble attempt to punch Zigzag, then he felt a flurry of fists against his head and neck.
스탠리가 지그재그를 한 대 때려보려 했지만, 곧이어 그의 머리와 목으로 주먹 세례가 쏟아졌다.
Zigzag had hold of his collar with one hand and was hitting him with the other.
지그재그는 한 손으로 그의 옷깃을 움켜쥐고 다른 한 손으로는 그를 난타했다.
The collar ripped and Stanley fell backward onto the dirt. “That’s enough!”
옷깃이 찢어지면서 스탠리는 흙바닥 위로 나자빠졌다. “그만해!”
Mr. Pendanski yelled. It wasn’t enough for Zigzag. He jumped on top of Stanley.
펜단스키 선생님이 고함을 질렀다. 하지만 지그재그에게는 충분하지 않았다. 그는 스탠리 위로 올라탔다.
“Stop!” shouted Mr. Pendanski.
“멈춰!” 펜단스키 선생님이 소리쳤다.
The side of Stanley’s face was pressed flat against the dirt.
스탠리의 얼굴 한쪽이 흙바닥에 납작하게 처박혔다.
He tried to protect himself, but Zigzag’s fists slammed off his arms and pounded his face into the ground.
그는 몸을 보호하려 애썼지만, 지그재그의 주먹은 그의 팔을 뚫고 얼굴을 땅바닥에 짓이겨댔다.
