마지막 구덩이
There was a change in the weather. For the worse. The air became unbearably humid.
날씨가 변했다. 나쁜 쪽으로 말이다. 공기는 견디기 힘들 정도로 습해졌다.
장면은 다시 110년 뒤, 현재의 스탠리 이야기로 돌아옵니다. 폭풍우가 몰려오며 날씨가 심상치 않게 변하고 있군요.
Stanley was drenched in sweat. Beads of moisture ran down the handle of his shovel.
스탠리는 땀으로 흠뻑 젖었다. 삽 자루를 타고 습기가 이슬처럼 맺혀 흘러내렸다.
It was almost as if the temperature had gotten so hot that the air itself was sweating.
기온이 너무 올라가서 마치 공기 자체가 땀을 흘리고 있는 듯한 착각이 들 정도였다.
A loud boom of thunder echoed across the empty lake. A storm was way off to the west, beyond the mountains.
텅 빈 호수 너머로 커다란 천둥소리가 울려 퍼졌다. 폭풍우는 서쪽 멀리, 산 너머에 머물러 있었다.
Stanley could count more than thirty seconds between the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder.
스탠리는 번개가 번쩍인 후 천둥소리가 들리기까지 서른 번 넘게 숫자를 셀 수 있었다.
That was how far away the storm was. Sound travels a great distance across a barren wasteland.
폭풍우가 그만큼 멀리 있다는 뜻이었다. 황량한 황무지에서는 소리가 아주 멀리까지 전달되었다.
Usually, Stanley couldn’t see the mountains at this time of day.
평소에 스탠리는 이맘때 산을 볼 수 없었다.
The only time they were visible was just at sunup, before the air became hazy.
산이 보이는 유일한 시간은 대기가 뿌옇게 변하기 직전인 해 뜰 녘뿐이었다.
