As he stood, he saw Lily against the school wall. She was with some other girls, heading back inside at the end of break time.
몸을 일으키던 코너의 눈에 학교 벽 쪽의 릴리가 들어왔다. 그녀는 쉬는 시간이 끝나갈 무렵 다른 여학생들과 함께 안으로 들어가고 있었다.
She wasn’t talking to them, just looking at Conor as she walked away.
그녀는 친구들과 대화하지 않고, 걸어가면서 그저 코너를 바라보았다.
“No help from Super Poodle today,” Sully said, still laughing. “Lucky for you, Sully,” Harry said, speaking for the first time.
“오늘은 슈퍼 푸들이 안 도와주네.” 설리가 여전히 웃으며 말했다. “운 좋은 줄 알아, 설리.” 해리가 처음으로 입을 뗐다.
Super Poodle은 릴리의 곱슬머리를 빗대어 비하하는 별명입니다. 릴리의 도움을 받지 못한 상황을 비꼬는 설리와 달리, 해리는 무언가 다른 생각을 하는 것 같군요.
Conor still hadn’t turned back to face them, but he could tell Harry wasn’t laughing at Sully’s joke.
코너는 여전히 그들을 마주 보지 않았지만, 해리가 설리의 농담에 웃지 않았다는 것쯤은 알 수 있었다.
Conor watched Lily until she was gone. “Hey, look at us when we’re talking to you,” Sully said,
코너는 릴리가 사라질 때까지 지켜보았다. “야, 말할 때는 사람을 봐야지.” 설리가 말했다.
burning from Harry’s comment no doubt and grabbing Conor’s shoulder, spinning him around.
해리의 말에 자극을 받은 것이 분명한 설리가 코너의 어깨를 붙잡고 강제로 돌려세웠다.
“Don’t touch him,” Harry said, calm and low, but so ominously that Sully immediately stepped back.
“손대지 마.” 해리가 차분하면서도 낮게, 하지만 아주 위협적으로 말하자 설리는 즉시 뒤로 물러났다.
“O’Malley and I have an understanding,” Harry said. “I’m the only one who touches him. Isn’t that right?”
“오말리와 나는 서로 통하는 게 있거든.” 해리가 말했다. “이 녀석한테 손을 댈 수 있는 건 나뿐이야. 그치?”
해리가 말하는 understanding(이해/합의)은 코너를 괴롭히는 일을 자신만이 주도하겠다는 심리적 지배를 의미합니다. 코너를 더욱 고립시키려는 해리의 의도가 엿보입니다.
Conor waited for a moment and then slowly nodded. That did seem to be the understanding.
코너는 잠시 머뭇거리다 천천히 고개를 끄덕였다. 정말로 그런 약속이라도 되어 있는 듯한 분위기였다.
Harry, his face still blank, his eyes still locked on Conor’s, stepped up close to him.
해리는 여전히 무표정한 얼굴로 코너의 눈을 빤히 응시하며 그에게 바짝 다가섰다.
Conor didn’t flinch, and they stood, eye-to-eye, while Anton and Sully looked at each other a bit nervously.
코너는 움찔하지 않았다. 두 소년이 눈싸움을 하는 동안 안톤과 설리는 초조하게 서로를 쳐다보았다.
Harry cocked his head slightly, as if a question had occurred to him, one he was trying to puzzle out.
해리는 마치 어떤 의문이 떠오른 듯, 그 답을 찾아내려는 듯 고개를 살짝 갸웃거렸다.
