16장: 고독
″Where to?″ asked the chauffeur when Momo got in beside him.
“어디로 갈 거냐?” 모모가 옆자리에 올라타자 운전기사가 물었다.
장소가 공항 로비에서 기지의 자동차 안으로 전환되었습니다.
She looked perplexed. Where did she want to go? She had to look for Cassiopeia, but where?
모모는 당황한 기색이었다. 어디로 가야 할까? 카시오페이아를 찾아야 했지만, 대체 어디서 찾아야 한단 말인가?
Where had she lost her? The tortoise hadn't been with them on the drive to the airport,
어디서 거북을 놓친 걸까? 공항으로 오는 차 안에는 거북이 없었다.
that much she knew for sure, so the likeliest place would be outside Guido's house.
그 점만은 확실했으므로, 가장 가능성 있는 장소는 기지의 집 앞이었다.
Then she remembered the words on Cassiopeia's shell: GOODBYE and TO LOOK FOR YOU.
그때 카시오페이아의 등껍질에 나타났던 글자가 떠올랐다. ‘안녕’, 그리고 ‘너를 찾으러’.
Of course! Cassiopeia had known beforehand that they would lose each other, so she'd gone looking for her.
그랬다! 카시오페이아는 서로를 잃어버리게 될 것을 미리 알고 그녀를 찾으러 갔던 것이다.
But where should she, Momo, go looking for Cassiopeia?
하지만 모모는 대체 어디로 가서 카시오페이아를 찾아야 한단 말인가?
″Make up your mind,″ said the chauffeur, beating an impatient tattoo on the steering wheel.
“빨리 결정해.” 운전기사가 핸들을 초조하게 두드리며 말했다.
beating a tattoo는 북을 두드리는 것처럼 손가락으로 탁탁 소리를 내며 두드리는 동작을 뜻합니다. 운전기사의 초조한 심리 상태를 묘사하고 있습니다.
″I've got better things to do with my time than take you joy-riding.″ ″Back to Guido's house, please,″ Momo replied.
“널 태우고 드라이브나 하기엔 내 시간이 아깝거든.” “기지 오빠네 집으로 다시 가 주세요.” 모모가 대답했다.
The chauffeur looked faintly surprised. ″I thought the boss said to drive you home. You mean you're coming to live at his place?″
운전기사는 약간 놀란 표정이었다. “주인님은 널 집에 데려다주라고 하셨는데. 그 집에서 살기라도 하겠다는 거냐?”
″No,″ said Momo, ″but I lost something in the road outside, and I've got to find it.″
“아니요. 하지만 집 앞 길가에서 뭘 좀 잃어버려서요. 꼭 찾아야 해요.” 모모가 말했다.
