I was quite uncomfortable lying on my back so I turned over, and as I did I quit breathing and my heart stopped beating.
“똑바로 누워 있는 게 너무 불편해서 몸을 뒤척였는데, 그 순간 숨이 멎고 심장도 멈춰버렸죠.”
Just then, I heard the nurses shout, “Code pink! Code pink!”
“바로 그때 간호사들이 “코드 핑크! 코드 핑크!”라고 외치는 소리가 들렸어요.”
Code pink는 병원에서 사용하는 응급 호출 코드 중 하나입니다. 보통 심정지나 호흡 정지 같은 초응급 상황이 발생했을 때 의료진을 급히 소집하기 위해 사용하죠.
As they were saying this, I could feel myself moving out of my body and sliding down between the mattress and the rail on the side of the bed—
“그 말을 듣는 것과 동시에 저는 몸 밖으로 빠져나와 매트리스와 침대 옆 난간 사이로 미끄러져 내려가는 것을 느꼈습니다.”
actually it seemed as if I went through the rail—on down to the floor.
“사실 난간을 그냥 통과해서 바닥까지 내려간 것 같았어요.”
Then, I started rising upward, slowly. On my way up, I saw more nurses come running into the room—there must have been a dozen of them.
“그러고는 천천히 위로 떠오르기 시작했습니다. 위로 올라가면서 보니 열두 명쯤 되는 간호사들이 방으로 뛰어 들어오고 있더군요.”
My doctor happened to be making his rounds in the hospital so they called him and I saw him come in, too.
“때마침 주치의 선생님도 회진 중이라 간호사들이 불렀고, 선생님이 들어오는 모습도 보였습니다.”
I thought, “I wonder what he’s doing here.”
“저는 속으로 ‘선생님이 여기엔 웬일이지?’라고 생각했죠.”
I drifted on up past the light fixture—I saw it from the side and very distinctly—
“저는 조명 기구를 지나 계속 떠올랐습니다. 옆에서 그 모습을 아주 또렷하게 보았어요.”
and then I stopped, floating right below the ceiling, looking down.
“그러다 천장 바로 밑에서 멈췄고, 공중에 둥둥 떠서 아래를 내려다보았습니다.”
I felt almost as though I were a piece of paper that someone had blown up to the ceiling.
“누군가 천장으로 불어 올린 종이 한 장이 된 듯한 기분이었죠.”
I watched them reviving me from up there! My body was lying down there stretched out on the bed,
“위에서 그들이 저를 살리려는 모습을 지켜보았습니다! 제 육체는 침대 위에 길게 뻗어 있었고,”
in plain view, and they were all standing around it.
“그 모습이 훤히 내려다보이는 가운데 사람들이 그 주위에 둘러서 있었습니다.”
