“How long is she staying?” she asked Rasheed. “Until she's better. Look at her. She's in no shape to go. Poor thing.”
“그 애가 언제까지 여기 있을 건가요?” 그녀가 라시드에게 물었다. “나을 때까지는 있어야지. 꼴을 좀 봐. 지금 어디 갈 수 있는 형편이 아니잖소. 가엾은 것.”
It was Rasheed who found the girl, who dug her out from beneath the rubble.
잔해 속에서 소녀를 찾아내어 직접 파낸 사람은 라시드였다.
“Lucky I was home,” he said to the girl. He was sitting on a folding chair beside Mariam's bed, where the girl lay.
“내가 집에 있어서 다행이었지.” 그가 소녀에게 말했다. 그는 소녀가 누워 있는 마리암의 침대 옆 접이식 의자에 앉아 있었다.
“Lucky for you, I mean. I dug you out with my own hands.”
“네게 다행이었다는 말이오. 내가 내 손으로 직접 널 파냈으니까.”
“There was a scrap of metal this big.” Here, he spread his thumb and index finger apart to show her,
“이만한 금속 파편이 박혀 있더군.” 그러고는 엄지와 검지를 벌려 보여주었는데,
at least doubling, in Mariam's estimation, the actual size of it.
마리암이 보기에 그는 실제 크기를 적어도 두 배는 부풀리고 있었다.
“This big. Sticking right out of your shoulder. It was really embedded in there.”
“이만한 게 네 어깨에 떡하니 박혀 있었어. 아주 깊숙이 박혀 있더라고.”
“I thought I'd have to use a pair of pliers. But you're all right. In no time, you'll be nau socha. Good as new.”
“펜치라도 써야 하는 건가 싶었지. 하지만 넌 이제 괜찮아. 금방 ‘나우 소차’, 그러니까 새것처럼 멀쩡해질 거야.”
나우 소차(nau socha)는 다리어로 새것 혹은 아주 새로운 상태를 뜻하는 말입니다.
It was Rasheed who salvaged a handful of Hakim's books.
하킴의 책들 중 몇 권을 건져낸 것도 라시드였다.
“Most of them were ash. The rest were looted, I'm afraid.” He helped Mariam watch over the girl that first week.
“대부분은 재가 되었고, 나머지는 약탈당한 모양이오.” 그는 첫 일주일 동안 마리암이 소녀를 돌보는 것을 거들어주었다.
One day, he came home from work with a new blanket and pillow. Another day, a bottle of pills. “Vitamins,” he said.
어느 날은 퇴근길에 새 담요와 베개를 사 왔고, 또 다른 날에는 알약 한 병을 사 와서는 ‘비타민’이라고 말했다.
It was Rasheed who gave Laila the news that her friend Tariq's house was occupied now.
라일라에게 친구 타리크의 집을 지금은 누군가 차지하고 있다는 소식을 전해준 것도 라시드였다.
타리크의 가족이 떠나 비어 있던 집을 낯선 사람들이 차지했다는 소식은 라일라에게 또 다른 상실감을 안겨주는군요.
