청년: “잠깐만요! 그 말을 그냥 듣고 넘어가라고요?”
let something slip by는 무언가를 그냥 지나치거나 눈감아준다는 뜻입니다.
“To get rid of one’s problems, all one can do is live in the universe all alone”?
“‘고민을 없애려면 우주에 홀로 존재하는 수밖에 없다’니요?”
What do you mean by that? If you lived all alone, wouldn’t you be horribly lonely?
“그게 무슨 뜻입니까? 우주에 혼자 산다면 엄청나게 외롭지 않겠어요?”
PHILOSOPHER: Oh, but being alone isn’t what makes you feel lonely.
철학자: “오, 하지만 혼자 있다고 해서 외로움을 느끼는 것은 아닙니다.”
Loneliness is having other people and society and community around you,
“외로움이란 주변에 타인과 사회, 그리고 공동체가 존재함에도 불구하고,”
and having a deep sense of being excluded from them.
“그들로부터 소외되었다고 느끼는 깊은 감각을 말합니다.”
To feel lonely, we need other people. That is to say, it is only in social contexts that a person becomes an “individual.”
“외로움을 느끼기 위해서는 타인이 필요해요. 즉, 인간은 오직 사회라는 맥락 속에서만 비로소 ‘개인’이 되는 것이죠.”
여기서 individual(개인)은 라틴어로 더 이상 나눌 수 없다는 뜻에서 유래했습니다. 사회라는 맥락 속에서 더 이상 쪼개질 수 없는 최소 단위로서의 인간을 의미하죠.
YOUTH: If you were really alone, that is, if you existed completely alone in the universe,
청년: “정말로 혼자라면, 그러니까 우주에 나 홀로 존재한다면,”
you wouldn’t be an individual and you wouldn’t feel lonely, either?
“개인이라는 개념도 없고 외로움도 느끼지 않게 된다는 말씀인가요?”
PHILOSOPHER: I suppose the very concept of loneliness wouldn’t even come up.
철학자: “아마 외로움이라는 개념 자체가 아예 생겨나지 않겠지요.”
You wouldn’t need language, and there’d be no use for logic or common sense, either.
“언어도 필요 없을 테고, 논리나 상식도 아무런 소용이 없을 겁니다.”
But such a thing is impossible. Even if you lived on an uninhabited island,
“하지만 그런 일은 불가능합니다. 설령 무인도에서 혼자 살더라도,”
uninhabited island는 사람이 살지 않는 무인도를 뜻합니다.
