제4장 테라비시아의 통치자들
이제 제4장이 시작됩니다. 두 주인공의 우정이 깊어지고 소설의 제목이기도 한 테라비시아가 처음으로 등장하는 중요한 장입니다.
Because school had started on the first Tuesday after Labor Day, it was a short week.
노동절 이후 첫 번째 화요일에 개학했기 때문에 이번 주는 짧았다.
Labor Day(노동절)는 9월 첫째 월요일인 미국의 공휴일로, 보통 이 연휴가 끝나고 가을 학기가 시작됩니다.
It was a good thing because each day was worse than the day before.
다행스러운 일이었다. 하루하루가 전날보다 더 엉망이었으니까.
Leslie continued to join the boys at recess, and every day she won.
레슬리는 쉬는 시간마다 계속 소년들 틈에 끼었고, 매일 우승을 차지했다.
By Friday a number of the fourth- and fifth-grade boys had already drifted away to play King of the Mountain on the slope between the two fields.
금요일쯤 되자 4, 5학년 소년들 상당수가 이미 흥미를 잃고 두 운동장 사이 비탈에서 ‘산의 왕’ 놀이를 하러 가버렸다.
Since there were only a handful left, they didn’t even have to have heats, which took away a lot of the suspense.
남은 인원이 몇 명뿐이라 예선전을 치를 필요조차 없었고, 그 바람에 긴장감도 사라져 버렸다.
Running wasn’t fun anymore. And it was all Leslie’s fault.
달리기는 더 이상 즐겁지 않았다. 이 모든 게 레슬리 탓이었다.
자신이 주인공이 되어 승리의 기쁨을 맛보려 했던 제스는 매번 압도적으로 이기는 레슬리 때문에 상실감을 느끼고 있습니다.
Jess knew now that he would never be the best runner of the fourth and fifth grades, and his only consolation was that neither would Gary Fulcher.
제스는 이제 자신이 4, 5학년에서 가장 빠른 주자가 될 수 없으리라는 사실을 깨달았다. 유일한 위안이라면 게리 풀처 역시 그렇게 되지 못했다는 것뿐이었다.
They went through the motions of the contest on Friday, but when it was over and Leslie had won again,
금요일에도 시합은 형식적으로나마 치러졌지만, 레슬리가 다시 우승을 차지하며 시합이 끝나자,
everyone sort of knew without saying so that it was the end of the races.
누가 먼저랄 것도 없이 이제 달리기 시합은 끝났다는 사실을 모두가 직감했다.
At least it was Friday, and Miss Edmunds was back. The fifth grade had music right after recess.
그래도 다행히 금요일이었고, 에드먼즈 선생님이 돌아왔다. 5학년은 쉬는 시간이 끝나자마자 음악 수업이 있었다.
쉬는 시간이 지나고 에드먼즈 선생님과 함께하는 금요일 음악 수업으로 장면이 전환됩니다.
Jess had passed Miss Edmunds in the hall earlier in the day, and she had stopped him and made a fuss over him.
제스는 아침 일찍 복도에서 에드먼즈 선생님과 마주쳤는데, 선생님은 제스를 불러 세우고는 무척 반갑게 아는 체를 해주었다.
