I felt his hand on the back of my head. “Don’t you worry about anything,” he said.
내 뒤통수에 닿는 아빠의 손길이 느껴졌다. “아무것도 걱정하지 마라.” 아빠가 말씀하셨다.
“It’s not time to worry.” When I heard that, I knew he had come back to us.
“아직은 걱정할 때가 아니란다.” 그 말을 들었을 때, 나는 아빠가 다시 우리 곁으로 돌아왔음을 알았다.
The blood in my legs began to flow again, and I raised my head.
다리에 다시 피가 도는 것 같았고, 나는 고개를 들었다.
“You really want us to do all that? I can’t remember everything Finches are supposed to do…”
“정말로 저희가 그 모든 걸 하길 바라세요? 핀치 집안사람들이 어떻게 해야 하는지 다 기억하지 못한단 말이에요……”
“I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” He went to the door and out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
“기억할 것 없다. 다 잊어버리렴.” 아빠는 문 쪽으로 걸어가 방을 나가시며 뒤로 문을 닫으셨다.
He nearly slammed it, but caught himself at the last minute and closed it softly.
아빠는 문을 쾅 닫으려다 마지막 순간에 마음을 고쳐먹고 살며시 닫으셨다.
As Jem and I stared, the door opened again and Atticus peered around.
젬 오빠와 내가 멍하니 쳐다보는 사이 문이 다시 열렸고 아빠가 얼굴을 내미셨다.
His eyebrows were raised, his glasses had slipped.
눈썹은 치켜 올라가 있었고 안경은 코끝까지 미끄러져 내려와 있었다.
“Get more like Cousin Joshua every day, don’t I? Do you think I’ll end up costing the family five hundred dollars?”
“나도 갈수록 조슈아 사촌 형님을 닮아가는 것 같지 않니? 내가 집안 돈을 500달러나 축내게 될 거라고 생각하니?”
고모의 강요에 못 이겨 평소답지 않은 훈계를 늘어놓았던 아빠가, 앞서 젬이 언급했던 사고뭉치 조슈아 사촌의 이야기를 꺼내며 농담으로 긴장을 풀어주시는 장면입니다.
I know now what he was trying to do, but Atticus was only a man. It takes a woman to do that kind of work.
아빠가 무엇을 하려 하셨는지 이제는 알지만, 아빠는 단지 남자였을 뿐이다. 그런 일은 역시 여자의 손길이 필요한 법이다.
