“The last time I swang in this swing, I almost crashed into a barn swallow,” he yelled.
“지난번에 이 그네 탔을 때, 하마터면 외양간 제비랑 부딪힐 뻔했어!” 에이머리가 소리쳤어요.
에이머리는 swung의 잘못된 과거형인 swang을 사용합니다. 문법에 서툰 어린 소년의 개성 있는 말투를 보여주는 대목입니다.
“Take that frog out!” ordered Fern. Avery straddled the rope and jumped.

“Your tongue is purple!” screamed Fern. “So is yours!” cried Avery, sailing out again with the frog.
“오빠 헵닥이 보라색이야!” 펀이 소리쳤어요. “너도 그래!” 개구리를 든 채 다시 밖으로 날아가며 에이머리가 외쳤어요.
아이들의 혀가 보라색인 이유는 외양간에 오기 전 들판에서 산딸기를 잔뜩 따 먹었기 때문입니다. 앞선 문장들과 연결되는 재미있는 디테일입니다.
“I have hay inside my dress! It itches!” called Fern. “Scratch it!” yelled Avery, as he sailed back.
“원피스 안에 건초가 들어갔나 봐! 가려워 죽겠어!” 펀이 소리쳤어요. “그럼 긁어!” 되돌아오며 에이머리가 대꾸했지요.
“It's my turn,” said Fern. “Jump off!” “Fern's got the itch!” sang Avery.
“이제 내 차례야. 얼른 내려!” 펀이 말했어요. “펀은 몸이 가렵대요!” 에이머리가 노래를 부르며 놀려댔답니다.
When he jumped off, he threw the swing up to his sister. She shut her eyes tight and jumped.
에이머리가 그네에서 내려 밧줄을 던져 주자, 펀은 눈을 꼭 감고 폴짝 뛰어내렸어요.
She felt the dizzy drop, then the supporting lift of the swing.
몸이 아래로 쑥 꺼지는 아찔함도 잠시, 곧 그네가 펀의 몸을 받쳐주며 위로 둥실 떠올랐답니다.
When she opened her eyes she was looking up into the blue sky and was about to fly back through the door.
다시 눈을 떴을 때 펀은 파란 하늘을 올려다보고 있었고, 금방이라도 다시 문을 통해 외양간 안으로 날아 들어갈 것만 같았어요.
They took turns for an hour. When the children grew tired of swinging,
두 아이는 한 시간 동안 번갈아 가며 그네를 탔답니다. 그러다 그네 타는 게 지겨워지자,
they went down toward the pasture and picked wild raspberries and ate them.
목초지로 내려가 야생 산딸기를 따 먹었지요.
신나게 그네를 탄 아이들이 이제 야생 산딸기를 따러 목초지로 자리를 옮기는군요.
Their tongues turned from purple to red. Fern bit into a raspberry that had a bad-tasting bug inside it, and got discouraged.
아이들의 혓바닥은 보라색에서 빨간색으로 변해갔어요. 그러다 펀은 고약한 맛이 나는 벌레가 든 산딸기를 한 입 베어 물고는 그만 기분이 상하고 말았답니다.
