At the bottom end of the rope was a fat knot to sit on. It was arranged so that you could swing without being pushed.

For a second you seemed to be falling to the barn floor far below, but then suddenly the rope would begin to catch you,
잠시 동안은 저 먼 외양간 바닥으로 곤두박질치는 것 같지만, 곧 밧줄이 몸을 잡아주기 시작하지요.
and you would sail through the barn door going a mile a minute, with the wind whistling in your eyes and ears and hair.
그러면 바람을 가르며 엄청난 속도로 외양간 문을 향해 휙 날아갔고, 눈과 귀와 머리카락 사이로 쌩쌩거리는 바람 소리가 들려왔답니다.
a mile a minute은 매우 빠른 속도를 의미하는 관용구입니다. 그네가 문밖으로 솟구칠 때의 짜릿한 속도감이 잘 느껴집니다.
Then you would zoom upward into the sky, and look up at the clouds, and the rope would twist and you would twist and turn with the rope.
다시 하늘 높이 솟구쳐 구름을 올려다볼 때면, 밧줄이 배배 꼬이면서 몸도 밧줄과 함께 빙글빙글 돌았어요.
Then you would drop down, down, down out of the sky and come sailing back into the barn almost into the hayloft,
그러다 하늘에서 아래로, 아래로, 또 아래로 떨어져서는 다시 외양간 안쪽 건초 다락 언저리까지 휙 날아 들어왔지요.
then sail out again (not quite so far this time), then in again (not quite so high),
그러고는 다시 밖으로 날아갔다가(이번에는 아까보다 덜 멀리요), 다시 안으로 들어왔어요(이번에는 아까보다 덜 높이요).
then out again, then in again, then out, then in; and then you'd jump off and fall down and let somebody else try it.
그렇게 밖으로, 안으로, 다시 밖으로, 안으로 왔다 갔다 하다가, 바닥으로 뛰어내려 다음 사람에게 차례를 넘겨주는 식이었지요.
