“Stop!” screamed Wilbur. “I don’t want to die! Save me, somebody! Save me!”

Fern was just about to jump up when a voice was heard. “Be quiet, Wilbur!” said Charlotte, who had been listening to this awful conversation.
펀이 막 자리에서 일어나려던 그때, 목소리가 들려왔어요. “윌버, 조용히 해!” 이 끔찍한 대화를 듣고 있던 샬롯이 말했어요.
“I can’t be quiet,” screamed Wilbur, racing up and down. “I don’t want to be killed. I don’t want to die.”
“조용히 못 하겠어.” 윌버가 이리저리 뛰어다니며 비명을 질렀어요. “죽고 싶지 않아. 잡아먹히기 싫단 말이야.”
“Is it true what the old sheep says, Charlotte? Is it true they are going to kill me when the cold weather comes?”
“샬롯, 저 양의 말이 사실이야? 날씨가 추워지면 사람들이 정말 날 죽일까?”
“Well,” said the spider, plucking thoughtfully at her web, “the old sheep has been around this barn a long time.”
“글쎄다.” 거미 샬롯이 거미줄을 생각에 잠긴 듯 튕기며 말했어요. “저 늙은 양은 이 외양간에서 아주 오랫동안 지내왔지.”
“She has seen many a spring pig come and go. If she says they plan to kill you, I’m sure it’s true.”
“수많은 봄 돼지들이 왔다가 사라지는 걸 봐 왔을 거야. 저 양이 너를 죽일 계획이라고 한다면, 아마 사실일 거다.”
“It’s also the dirtiest trick I ever heard of. What people don’t think of!”
“정말 내가 들어본 일 중에 가장 치사한 수작이야. 사람들이 어떻게 그런 생각까지 하는지!”
친구인 윌버의 위기를 함께 분노하며 치사한 수작이라고 비난하는 샬롯의 모습에서 둘 사이의 강한 유대감을 확인할 수 있습니다.
Wilbur burst into tears. “I don’t want to die,” he moaned. “I want to stay alive, right here in my comfortable manure pile with all my friends.”
윌버가 울음을 터뜨렸어요. “죽고 싶지 않아.” 윌버가 신음하듯 말했어요. “난 그냥 살고 싶어. 친구들이랑 같이 여기 아늑한 거름 더미에서 살고 싶단 말이야.”
“I want to breathe the beautiful air and lie in the beautiful sun.”
“이 아름다운 공기도 마시고 따스한 햇볕 아래 누워 있고 싶어.”
“You’re certainly making a beautiful noise,” snapped the old sheep.
“정말이지 ‘아름다운’ 소동을 피우고 있구나.” 늙은 양이 톡 쏘아붙였어요.
beautiful noise는 윌버가 말한 아름다운이라는 단어를 비꼬아 표현한 늙은 양의 냉소적인 위트입니다.
“I don’t want to die!” screamed Wilbur, throwing himself to the ground.
“죽기 싫어!” 윌버가 땅바닥에 몸을 던지며 울부짖었답니다.
“You shall not die,” said Charlotte, briskly. “What? Really?” cried Wilbur. “Who’s going to save me?”
“넌 죽지 않을 거야.” 샬롯이 씩씩하게 말했어요. “뭐? 정말? 누가 날 구할 건데?” 윌버가 외쳤어요.
