Chapter IV Loneliness
제4장 외로움
화창했던 탈출 소동이 끝나고, 다음 날 비 오는 농장의 쓸쓸한 풍경으로 장면이 바뀝니다.
The next day was rainy and dark. Rain fell on the roof of the barn and dripped steadily from the eaves.
다음 날은 비가 내리고 어둑어둑했어요. 외양간 지붕 위로 비가 쏟아졌고 처마 밑으로는 빗물이 끊임없이 뚝뚝 떨어졌지요.
Rain fell in the barnyard and ran in crooked courses down into the lane where thistles and pigweed grew.
비는 외양간 마당에도 내렸고, 엉겅퀴와 비름이 자라는 좁은 길을 따라 구불구불한 물줄기를 만들며 흘러갔어요.
thistles(엉겅퀴)와 pigweed(비름)는 농장에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 잡초들입니다. 비에 젖은 농장 길의 풍경을 아주 세밀하게 묘사하고 있습니다.
Rain spattered against Mrs. Zuckerman’s kitchen windows and came gushing out of the downspouts.
빗줄기는 저커먼 부인의 주방 창문을 세차게 때렸고 낙수받이 통에서는 물이 콸콸 쏟아져 나왔답니다.
Rain fell on the backs of the sheep as they grazed in the meadow. When the sheep tired of standing in the rain,
들판에서 풀을 뜯던 양들의 등 위로도 비가 내렸어요. 비를 맞으며 서 있는 게 지겨워진 양들은,
they walked slowly up the lane and into the fold. Rain upset Wilbur’s plans.
좁은 길을 따라 천천히 걸어 올라와 양 우리 안으로 들어갔지요. 비는 윌버의 계획을 엉망으로 망쳐 놓았어요.
Wilbur had planned to go out, this day, and dig a new hole in his yard. He had other plans, too.
윌버는 이날 밖으로 나가서 마당에 새 구덩이를 팔 계획이었거든요. 다른 계획들도 아주 많았답니다.
His plans for the day went something like this: Breakfast at six-thirty. Skim milk, crusts, middlings, bits of doughnuts,
윌버의 일과 계획은 대충 이랬어요. 아침 식사는 여섯 시 반. 메뉴는 탈지유, 빵껍질, 밀기울, 도넛 조각,
탈지유인 skim milk와 middlings(밀기울) 등은 당시 농장에서 돼지에게 주던 전형적인 먹이들입니다.
wheat cakes with drops of maple syrup sticking to them, potato skins, leftover custard pudding with raisins,
메이플 시럽을 곁들인 팬케이크, 감자 껍질, 건포도가 든 남은 커스터드 푸딩,
and bits of Shredded Wheat. Breakfast would be finished at seven.
그리고 시리얼 조각들이었지요. 아침 식사는 일곱 시에 끝날 예정이었어요.
Shredded Wheat는 통밀을 잘게 부수어 구운 시리얼의 일종입니다. 윌버의 식단이 상당히 구체적으로 나열되어 있어 그의 엄청난 식욕을 짐작하게 합니다.
From seven to eight, Wilbur planned to have a talk with Templeton, the rat that lived under his trough.
일곱 시부터 여덟 시까지, 윌버는 밥통 밑에 사는 쥐 템플턴과 수다를 떨 계획이었어요.
Talking with Templeton was not the most interesting occupation in the world but it was better than nothing.
템플턴과 이야기하는 게 세상에서 가장 즐거운 일은 아니었지만, 그래도 아무것도 안 하는 것보다는 나았지요.
