“He leaves me notes in my locker that say stuff like Everybody Hates You.”

“You should tell your teacher about that.” Jack looks at me like I'm an idiot and shakes his head.
“선생님께 말씀드려야 하지 않겠니.” 잭은 나를 멍청이 보듯 쳐다보며 고개를 젓는다.
“Anyway, you have all these neutrals,” I say, pointing to the list. “If you get them on your side, things will even up a bit.”
“어쨌든 여기 중립인 애들이 이렇게나 많잖아.” 내가 명단을 가리키며 말한다. “이 애들을 네 편으로 만들면 전력이 비슷해질 거야.”
“Yeah, well, that's really going to happen,” he says sarcastically.
“네, 참 잘도 그러겠네요.” 잭이 비꼬듯 말한다.
“Why not?” He shoots me another look like I am absolutely the stupidest guy he's ever talked to in the world.
“왜 안 된다는 거야?” 녀석은 자기가 지금까지 만난 사람 중에 내가 세상에서 제일 멍청하다는 듯한 눈빛을 다시 한번 보낸다.
“What?” I say. He shakes his head like I'm hopeless.
“왜?” 내 질문에 녀석은 나를 구제 불능이라는 듯 보며 고개를 내젓는다.
“Let's just say,” he says, “I'm friends with someone who isn't exactly the most popular kid in the school.”
“그냥 이렇게만 말해둘게요.” 잭이 말한다. “제 친구가 학교에서 그렇게 인기 있는 애는 아니거든요.”
Then it hits me, what he's not coming out and saying: August. This is all about his being friends with August.

We see the bus coming down Amesfort Avenue. “Well, just hang in there,” I tell him, handing back the paper.
에임스포트 애비뉴 저편에서 버스가 오는 게 보인다. “음, 어쨌든 조금만 더 버텨 봐.” 나는 종이를 돌려주며 말한다.
“Middle school is about as bad as it gets, and then it gets better. Everything'll work out.”
“중학교 때가 인생에서 제일 힘든 시기란다. 나중엔 다 좋아질 거야. 다 잘 해결될 거다.”
He shrugs and shoves the list back into his pocket. We wave bye when he gets on the bus, and I watch it pull away.
잭은 어깨를 으쓱하더니 명단을 다시 주머니에 쑤셔 넣는다. 버스에 올라타는 녀석에게 손을 흔들어 작별 인사를 하고, 나는 멀어져 가는 버스를 지켜본다.
