Zero had stopped just outside the tent, and Stanley almost ran into him.
제로는 텐트 바로 밖에 멈춰 서 있었고, 스탠리는 하마터면 그와 부딪힐 뻔했다.
“I'll try to teach you to read if you want,” Stanley offered.
“원한다면 내가 글 읽는 법을 가르쳐 줄게.” 스탠리가 제안했다.
“I don't know if I know how to teach, but I'm not that worn-out today, since you dug a lot of my hole.”
“가르치는 법을 잘 알지는 모르겠지만, 네가 내 구덩이를 많이 파준 덕분에 오늘은 별로 안 힘들거든.”
A big smile spread across Zero's face. They returned to the tent, where they were less likely to be bothered.
제로의 얼굴에 커다란 미소가 번졌다. 그들은 방해받을 일이 적은 텐트 안으로 다시 들어갔다.
Stanley got his box of stationery and a pen out of his crate. They sat on the ground.
스탠리는 상자에서 편지지 상자와 펜을 꺼냈다. 그들은 바닥에 주저앉았다.
“Do you know the alphabet?” Stanley asked. For a second, he thought he saw a flash of defiance in Zero's eyes, but then it passed.
“알파벳은 알아?” 스탠리가 물었다. 찰나의 순간 제로의 눈에 반항적인 기색이 스치는 듯했지만, 이내 사라졌다.
“I think I know some of it,” Zero said. “A, B, C, D.” “Keep going,” said Stanley.
“조금은 아는 것 같아.” 제로가 말했다. “A, B, C, D.” “계속해 봐.” 스탠리가 말했다.
Zero's eyes looked upward. “E...” “F,” said Stanley. “G,” said Zero.
제로는 눈을 위로 치켜떴다. “E……” “F.” 스탠리가 말하자 제로가 이었다. “G.”
He blew some air out of the side of his mouth. “H... I... K, P.”
제로는 입가로 숨을 훅 내뱉었다. “H…… I…… K, P.”
“H, I, J, K, L,” Stanley said. “That's right,” said Zero. “I've heard it before. I just don't have it memorized exactly.”
“H, I, J, K, L이야.” 스탠리가 교정해 주었다. “맞아.” 제로가 말했다. “예전에 들어본 적은 있어. 그냥 정확히 못 외웠을 뿐이야.”
“That's all right,” said Stanley. “Here, I'll say the whole thing, just to kind of refresh your memory, then you can try it.”
“괜찮아.” 스탠리가 말했다. “자, 내가 처음부터 끝까지 다 말해줄 테니까 기억을 되살려 봐. 그러고 나서 네가 해보는 거야.”
