할아버지는 흥분된 목소리로 말씀하셨다. “내가 다 준비해 놨다, 빌리야. 이번 챔피언 대회에 올드 단과 리틀 애니를 출전시킬 수 있어.”
I was so surprised at what Grandpa had said I couldn’t utter a word.
할아버지의 말씀에 너무 놀라 나는 한 마디도 할 수 없었다.
At first I was scared and then a wonderful feeling came over me.

After several attempts, I croaked, “Can just any dog be in this hunt?”
몇 번이나 헛기침을 한 뒤에야 나는 쉰 목소리로 물었다. “아무 개나 이 대회에 나갈 수 있는 거예요?”
Grandpa almost jumped as he answered, “No, sir, not just any hound can be entered.
할아버지는 펄쩍 뛰다시피 하며 대답하셨다. “아니, 아무 사냥개나 나갈 수 있는 게 아니란다.
They have to be the best, and they have to be registered, too.”
최고의 사냥개여야 하고, 등록도 되어 있어야 하지.”
registered는 공식적인 혈통 등록을 의미합니다. 챔피언 대회인 만큼 아무 개나 나갈 수 없고, 엄격한 혈통 증명이 필요하다는 뜻이죠.
He started talking with his hands. Pointing to a chair, he said, “Sit down and I’ll tell you all about it.”
할아버지는 손짓을 섞어가며 설명하기 시작하셨다. 할아버지는 의자를 가리키며 말씀하셨다. “여기 앉아 보렴. 내가 다 이야기해 주마.”
Grandpa calmed down a little and started talking in a serious voice.
할아버지는 마음을 조금 가라앉히시고 진지한 목소리로 말씀하셨다.
“Billy,” he said, “it takes some doing to have a set of dogs entered in this hunt.
“빌리야,” 할아버지가 말씀하셨다. “이 대회에 개들을 출전시키는 게 그리 쉬운 일은 아니었단다.
