“I think so, yes,” Matilda said. “Are you sure?” “Why yes, Miss Honey, I'm fairly sure.”
“네, 할 수 있을 것 같아요.” 마틸다가 대답했다. “정말 자신 있니?” “네, 허니 선생님. 꽤 확실해요.”
“What is it then, two times four hundred and eighty-seven?” “Nine hundred and seventy-four,” Matilda said immediately.
“그럼 2 곱하기 487은 얼마니?” “974예요.” 마틸다가 즉시 대답했다.
She spoke quietly and politely and without any sign of showing off.
마틸다는 잘난 척하는 기색 전혀 없이 차분하고 예의 바르게 대답했다.
Miss Honey gazed at Matilda with absolute amazement, but when next she spoke she kept her voice level.
허니 선생님은 경악을 금치 못하며 마틸다를 바라보았지만, 다시 입을 열 때는 목소리를 최대한 평온하게 유지하려 애썼다.
“That is really splendid,” she said. “But of course multiplying by two is a lot easier than some of the bigger numbers.

What about the other multiplication tables? Do you know any of those?” “I think so, Miss Honey. I think I do.”
“다른 구구단은 어떠니? 아는 게 더 있니?” “그런 것 같아요, 허니 선생님. 제 생각엔 알고 있어요.”
“Which ones, Matilda? How far have you got?” “I... I don't quite know,” Matilda said. “I don't know what you mean.”
“어떤 것들을 아니, 마틸다? 어디까지 알고 있어?” “그게... 잘 모르겠어요.” 마틸다가 대답했다. “무슨 말씀이신지 잘 모르겠어요.”
“What I mean is do you for instance know the three-times table?” “Yes, Miss Honey.”
“그러니까 예를 들어서 3단 같은 것도 알고 있느냐는 뜻이란다.” “네, 선생님.”
“And the four-times?” “Yes, Miss Honey.” “Well, how many do you know, Matilda? Do you know all the way up to the twelve-times table?”
“그럼 4단은?” “네, 선생님.” “세상에, 마틸다. 대체 얼마나 알고 있는 거니? 설마 12단까지 전부 다 아는 거니?”
“Yes, Miss Honey.” “What are twelve sevens?” “Eighty-four,” Matilda said.
“네, 선생님.” “그럼 12 곱하기 7은 얼마니?” “84예요.” 마틸다가 대답했다.
Miss Honey paused and leaned back in her chair behind the plain table that stood in the middle of the floor in front of the class.
허니 선생님은 말을 멈추고 교실 앞쪽 중앙에 놓인 평범한 책상 뒤 의자에 몸을 기대었다.
