The little prince sat down on the table and he was breathing fast.
어린 왕자는 탁자 위에 걸터앉아 숨을 몰아쉬었어요.
He was tired from travelling so much and so far.
아주 멀리까지 오랫동안 여행을 하느라 무척 지쳐 있었거든요.
“Where do you come from?” the old gentleman asked him.
“넌 어디서 왔니?” 노신사가 그에게 물었어요.
“What’s that big book?” said the little prince. “What are you doing here?”
“그 커다란 책은 뭔가요? 여기서 뭘 하고 계세요?” 어린 왕자가 물었어요.
“I am a geographer,” the old gentleman answered. “What’s a geographer?”
“나는 지리학자란다.” 노신사가 대답했어요. “지리학자가 뭐예요?”
“A geographer is a scientist who knows where the seas are, and rivers, cities, mountains and deserts.”
“지리학자란 바다와 강, 도시와 산, 그리고 사막이 어디에 있는지 연구하는 학자란다.”
“That’s very interesting,” said the little prince.
“와, 정말 근사하네요.” 어린 왕자가 말했어요.
“Finally here is a man who has a real job,” he thought.
‘드디어 진짜 가치 있는 일을 하는 사람을 만났구나.’ 그는 생각했지요.
실체가 없는 권위나 소유에만 집착하던 다른 어른들과 달리, 구체적이고 체계적인 학문을 다루는 지리학자를 보며 어린 왕자가 느끼는 신뢰감이 나타납니다.
And he looked around at the geographer’s planet. The planet was amazing.
그러고는 지리학자의 별을 두루 살펴보았어요. 참으로 웅장하고 멋진 별이었거든요.
“Your planet is very beautiful,” he said. “Does it have any oceans?”
“아저씨의 별은 정말 아름답네요. 여기에도 바다가 있나요?”
“I can’t say,” said the geographer. “Ah!” the little prince was disappointed.
“그건 나도 잘 모른단다.” 지리학자가 대답했어요. “아!” 어린 왕자는 실망한 기색을 감추지 못했죠.
“And mountains?” “I can’t say,” said the geographer.
“그럼 산은요?” “그것도 잘 모르겠구나.” 지리학자가 말했어요.
