They told me that it was better to study geography, history, maths and grammar.
지리나 역사, 산수나 문법 공부에 전념하는 게 좋겠다고 충고해주었어요.
That’s why, at the age of six, I left a great career as a painter.
그렇게 나는 여섯 살의 나이에 화가라는 멋진 꿈을 접어야 했답니다.
I did it because my picture number one and picture number two were not successful when adults saw them.
내 그림 제1호와 제2호가 어른들에게 좋은 반응을 얻지 못했기 때문이죠.
Adults never understand anything alone. And children are not happy when they have to always give them explanations.
어른들은 스스로는 아무것도 이해하지 못해요. 게다가 아이들이 일일이 설명을 해줘야 한다는 건 정말이지 지치는 일이었거든요.
So I had to choose another profession. I learnt to fly planes. I flew all over the world.
그래서 전 다른 직업을 선택해야만 했고, 비행기 조종법을 배웠어요. 그리고 전 세계를 날아다녔죠.
꿈을 포기했던 소년이 시간이 흘러 어른이 되어 비행기 조종사라는 직업을 갖게 된 시점입니다.
And it’s true that geography was very useful to me.
지리 공부는 정말 큰 도움이 되었어요.
I could see the difference between China and Arizona at first look. It is very useful if you are lost in the night.
한눈에 중국과 애리조나를 구별할 수 있었거든요. 밤중에 길을 잃었을 때 지리 지식은 아주 유용하답니다.
During my life, I had a lot of contact with many serious people.
살면서 나는 진지한 일을 하는 사람들을 아주 많이 만났어요.
I lived a lot among the adults. I could see them from a close distance.
어른들 틈에 섞여 오랫동안 살면서 그들을 아주 가까이서 지켜보았죠.
This experience did not improve my opinion of them much.
하지만 그런 경험을 하고 나서도 어른들에 대한 내 생각은 크게 달라지지 않았어요.
