10월 14일 기록에서 엿새가 흐른 뒤의 새로운 일기 기록입니다.
Dearest Kitty, My hand's still shaking, though it's been two hours since we had the scare.
사랑하는 키티, 정말 무서운 일이 있고 나서 두 시간이나 지났는데도 아직 손이 떨려.
I should explain that there are five fire extinguishers in the building.
우선 건물에 소화기가 다섯 개 있다는 걸 먼저 설명해야겠다.
The office staff stupidly forgot to warn us that the carpenter, or whatever he's called, was coming to fill the extinguishers.
사무실 직원들이 소화기를 채우러 목수인지 뭔지 하는 사람이 올 거라는 소식을 깜빡하고 우리한테 안 알려준 거야.
As a result, we didn't bother to be quiet until I heard the sound of hammering on the landing (across from the bookcase).
그래서 우린 복도(책장 맞은편)에서 망치질 소리가 들릴 때까지 조용히 해야 한다는 것도 모르고 있었어.
여기서 landing은 계단 중간이나 끝에 있는 넓은 공간인 층계참을 의미합니다.
I immediately assumed it was the carpenter and went to warn Bep, who was eating lunch, that she couldn't go back downstairs.
난 즉시 목수라고 짐작하고는 점심을 먹고 있던 베프 언니에게 아래층으로 내려가면 안 된다고 알려주러 갔지.

After working for about fifteen minutes, he laid his hammer and some other tools on our bookcase (or so we thought!) and banged on our door.

여기서 bookcase는 앞서 나왔던 포스카일 아저씨가 만든 은신처의 비밀 입구를 가리키는 회전 책장을 말합니다.

우린 공포로 얼굴이 하얗게 질렸지. 결국 그 사람이 뭔가를 눈치채고 이 수상해 보이는 책장을 확인해 보려는 걸까?
전혀 모르는 외부인이 은신처의 입구인 책장을 건드리는 것만으로도 나치에게 발각될 수 있다는 엄청난 공포를 느끼는 상황입니다.

그 사람이 계속 문을 두드리고, 당기고, 밀고, 흔드는 소리가 들려서 정말 그런 줄만 알았어.
I was so scared I nearly fainted at the thought of this total stranger managing to discover our wonderful hiding place.
전혀 모르는 낯선 사람이 우리의 이 멋진 은신처를 발견해낼지도 모른다는 생각에 너무 무서워서 기절할 뻔했다니까.
