Atticus shook his head at me again. “But he’s gone and drowned his dinner in syrup,” I protested. “He’s poured it all over—”
아빠가 다시 나를 향해 고개를 저으셨다. “하지만 아빠, 저 애가 저녁밥을 시럽에 아주 빠뜨려 버렸는걸요.” 나는 항의하듯 말했다. “시럽을 온통 다 부어서—”
It was then that Calpurnia requested my presence in the kitchen.
바로 그때 캘퍼니아 아주머니가 나를 부엌으로 불러들였다.
She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia’s grammar became erratic.
아주머니는 몹시 화가 나 있었고, 그럴 때면 아주머니의 말투는 평소와 다르게 거칠어지곤 했다.
캘퍼니아가 몹시 화가 났을 때 문법이 흐트러진다는 것은, 감정이 격해지면서 평소 가다듬어 쓰던 표준 영어가 아닌 자신의 본래 말투(방언)가 튀어나오는 것을 의미합니다.
When in tranquility, her grammar was as good as anybody’s in Maycomb.
평온할 때의 아주머니는 메이컴의 누구 못지않게 올바른 문장을 구사했다.
Atticus said Calpurnia had more education than most colored folks. When she squinted down at me the tiny lines around her eyes deepened.
아빠는 캘퍼니아 아주머니가 웬만한 흑인들보다 훨씬 교육을 많이 받았다고 말씀하시곤 했다. 나를 내려다보는 아주머니의 가늘게 뜬 눈가에 잔주름이 깊게 패였다.
“There’s some folks who don’t eat like us,” she whispered fiercely, “but you ain’t called on to contradict ‘em at the table when they don’t.”
“우리랑 식사 예법이 다른 사람들도 있는 법이야.” 아주머니가 무섭게 속삭였다. “그렇다고 그 사람들이 다르게 먹는다고 해서 식탁에서 면박을 주는 건 네가 할 일이 아니야.”
상대방의 형편이나 관습을 존중해야 한다는 아주머니의 단호한 훈육이 느껴지는 대목입니다.
“That boy’s yo’ comp’ny and if he wants to eat up the table cloth you let him, you hear?”
“저 아이는 네 손님이야. 그러니까 저 애가 식탁보를 씹어 먹고 싶다고 해도 넌 그냥 내버려 둬야 해. 내 말 알겠어?”
“He ain’t company, Cal, he’s just a Cunningham—” “Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny,”
“저 애는 손님이 아니에요, 아주머니. 그냥 커닝햄 집안 애일 뿐이라고요—” “당장 입 다물지 못해! 그게 누구든 이 집 발을 들여놓는 사람은 다 네 손님이야.”
“and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty!”
“그러니 네가 대단한 부잣집이라도 되는 것처럼 남의 행동거지를 함부로 들먹이는 꼴을 다시는 내 눈에 띄게 하지 마라!”
“Yo’ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin’ ’em—”
“네 집안이 커닝햄 집안보다 나을지는 몰라도, 그렇게 행동해서 그 애들을 망신 주는 건 아무 소용도 없는 짓이야—”
“if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!”
“식탁에서 제대로 예의를 갖춰 먹지 못하겠다면, 그냥 여기 남아서 부엌데기처럼 따로 먹으렴!”
Calpurnia sent me through the swinging door to the diningroom with a stinging smack.
캘퍼니아 아주머니는 내 엉덩이를 따끔하게 한 대 후려치고는 나를 식당으로 연결된 여닫이문 밖으로 내쫓았다.
