그리고 고장 난 아이스크림 제조기에 맞지도 않는 크랭크를 포함한 온갖 쓸모없는 잡동사니들이 가득했답니다.
ice-cream freezer(아이스크림 제조기)는 당시 전기가 아닌 수동으로 크랭크를 돌려 얼음을 얼리며 아이스크림을 만들던 기계를 의미합니다.
Templeton knew the dump and liked it. There were good hiding places there—excellent cover for a rat.
템플턴은 이 쓰레기장을 아주 잘 알았고 또 좋아했어요. 쥐가 숨기에 더없이 좋은 은신처들이 많았거든요.
And there was usually a tin can with food still clinging to the inside.
게다가 보통 통조림 깡통 안에는 먹다 남은 음식 찌꺼기들이 묻어 있곤 했지요.
Templeton was down there now, rummaging around. When he returned to the barn,
템플턴은 지금 그곳에서 이것저것 뒤지고 있었어요. 외양간으로 돌아왔을 때,
he carried in his mouth an advertisement he had torn from a crumpled magazine.
템플턴은 구겨진 잡지에서 찢어낸 광고지 하나를 입에 물고 있었답니다.
“How’s this?” he asked, showing the ad to Charlotte. “It says ‘Crunchy.’ ‘Crunchy’ would be a good word to write in your web.”
“이건 어때?” 템플턴이 샬롯에게 광고지를 보여주며 물었어요. “여기에 ‘바삭바삭한’이라고 적혀 있어. 거미줄에 쓰기에 아주 좋은 단어 같은데.”
“Just the wrong idea,” replied Charlotte. “Couldn’t be worse. We don’t want Zuckerman to think Wilbur is crunchy.”
“완전히 잘못 짚었어.” 샬롯이 대답했어요. “이보다 더 나쁠 순 없지. 저커먼 아저씨가 윌버를 ‘바삭바삭’하다고 생각하게 만들 순 없잖아.”
“He might start thinking about crisp, crunchy bacon and tasty ham. That would put ideas into his head.”
“그러면 바삭하게 구워진 베이컨이나 맛있는 햄을 떠올리게 될 거야. 아저씨 머릿속에 그런 생각이 들게 해서는 안 돼.”
crunchy(바삭바삭한)라는 표현은 서구권에서 잘 구워진 베이컨을 묘사할 때 흔히 쓰입니다. 윌버가 도축될 위기에 처한 상황이라 샬롯이 매우 예민하게 반응하는 것입니다.
“We must advertise Wilbur’s noble qualities, not his tastiness. Go get another word, please, Templeton!”
“우리는 윌버의 훌륭한 품성을 알려야지, 얼마나 맛있는지를 광고해서는 안 된단 말이야. 템플턴, 가서 다른 단어를 좀 찾아다 줄래?”
The rat looked disgusted. But he sneaked away to the dump and was back in a while with a strip of cotton cloth.
쥐는 기분 나쁜 표정을 지었어요. 하지만 다시 쓰레기장으로 살금살금 가더니 잠시 후 면 천 조각 하나를 가지고 돌아왔지요.
“How’s this?” he asked. “It’s a label off an old shirt.” Charlotte examined the label. It said PRE-SHRUNK.
“이건 어때?” 쥐가 물었어요. “낡은 셔츠에서 떼어낸 라벨이야.” 샬롯은 그 라벨을 살펴보았어요. 거기에는 ‘방축 가공’이라고 적혀 있었지요.
PRE-SHRUNK(방축 가공)는 세탁 후 옷이 줄어들지 않도록 미리 가공 처리했다는 의류 용어입니다.
