“Why can't you just say ‘here’? Why do you have to repeat everything?”
“그냥 ‘여기 있어’라고 한 번만 말하면 안 되니? 왜 모든 말을 다 반복하는 거야?”
“It's my idio-idio-idiosyncrasy,” replied the gander. “Goose?” said Charlotte.
“그건 나-나-나만의 특-특-특징이라서 그래.” 수거위가 대답했어요. “거위?” 샬롯이 물었지요.
idiosyncrasy(특이성)는 한 개인의 독특한 기질이나 습관을 뜻하는 어려운 단어입니다. 자신의 말더듬 습관을 어려운 단어로 당당하게 변명하는 수거위의 모습이 우스꽝스럽군요.
“Here, here, here!” said the goose. Charlotte glared at her. “Goslings, one through seven?”
“여기, 여기, 여기 있어!” 거위가 대답했어요. 샬롯은 거위를 한 번 쏘아보고는 말을 이었지요. “아기 거위들, 1번부터 7번까지?”
“Bee-bee-bee! Bee-bee-bee! Bee-bee-bee! Bee-bee-bee!” said the goslings. “This is getting to be quite a meeting,” said Charlotte.
“삐-삐-삐! 삐-삐-삐! 삐-삐-삐! 삐-삐-삐!” 아기 거위들이 대답했어요. “정말 대단한 회의가 되겠는걸.” 샬롯이 말했어요.
“Anybody would think we had three ganders, three geese, and twenty-one goslings. Sheep?”
“누가 보면 수거위 세 마리에 엄마 거위 세 마리, 아기 거위는 스물한 마리나 있는 줄 알겠어. 양들?”
“He-aa-aa!” answered the sheep all together. “Lambs?” “He-aa-aa!” answered the lambs all together.
“매-애-애!” 양들이 한목소리로 대답했어요. “어린 양들?” “매-애-애!” 이번엔 어린 양들이 다 같이 대답했지요.
“Templeton?” No answer. “Templeton?” No answer. “Well, we are all here except the rat,” said Charlotte.
“템플턴?” 아무 대답이 없었어요. “템플턴?” 여전히 대답이 없었지요. “음, 그 쥐만 빼고 다 모였구나.” 샬롯이 말했어요.
“I guess we can proceed without him. Now, all of you must have noticed what's been going on around here the last few days.
“템플턴이 없어도 그냥 진행하자. 자, 다들 지난 며칠 동안 여기서 무슨 일이 있었는지 눈치챘을 거야.”
The message I wrote in my web, praising Wilbur, has been received. The Zuckermans have fallen for it, and so has everybody else.
“내가 거미줄에 윌버를 칭찬하며 써 놓은 메시지가 잘 전달됐어. 저커먼 씨 가족은 물론이고 다른 사람들도 모두 속아 넘어갔지.”
Zuckerman thinks Wilbur is an unusual pig, and therefore he won't want to kill him and eat him.
“저커먼 아저씨는 윌버가 아주 특별한 돼지라고 생각하셔. 그래서 이제 윌버를 죽여서 잡아먹으려 하지 않으실 거야.”
