“Well, I didn’t think you were expecting woodpeckers,” said Wilbur, bitterly. Wilbur next tried one of the lambs.
“글쎄, 딱따구리가 태어나길 기다릴 거라고는 생각 안 했어.” 윌버가 퉁명스럽게 대꾸했어요. 그러고 나서 윌버는 어린 양들 중 한 마리에게 가보았지요.
“Will you please play with me?” he asked. “Certainly not,” said the lamb.
“나랑 같이 놀아줄래?” 윌버가 묻자 어린 양이 대답했어요. “절대로 안 돼.”
“In the first place, I cannot get into your pen, as I am not old enough to jump over the fence.
“첫째로, 난 아직 울타리를 뛰어넘을 만큼 크지 않아서 네 우리 안으로 들어갈 수가 없어.”
In the second place, I am not interested in pigs. Pigs mean less than nothing to me.”
“둘째로, 난 돼지한테 관심이 없거든. 나한테 돼지는 ‘아무것도 아닌 것’보다도 못한 존재야.”
저커먼 농장의 식구인 어린 양입니다. 돼지에 대해 전혀 관심이 없다는 점을 분명히 하며 윌버의 놀이 제안을 단칼에 거절합니다.
“What do you mean, less than nothing?” replied Wilbur. “I don’t think there is any such thing as less than nothing.
“아무것도 아닌 것보다 못하다니, 그게 무슨 소리야?” 윌버가 대꾸했어요. “세상에 아무것도 아닌 것보다 못한 건 없다고 봐.”
Nothing is absolutely the limit of nothingness. It’s the lowest you can go. It’s the end of the line.
“‘아무것도 없음’이란 말 그대로 아무것도 없는 상태의 끝이잖아. 가장 낮은 단계이고, 막다른 곳이라고.”
How can something be less than nothing? If there were something that was less than nothing,
“어떻게 무언가가 아무것도 아닌 것보다 못할 수 있겠어? 만약 아무것도 아닌 것보다 못한 게 있다면,”
then nothing would not be nothing, it would be something—even though it’s just a very little bit of something.
“그건 더 이상 ‘아무것도 아님’이 아니야. 아주 조금이라도 ‘무언가’가 있는 상태인 거지.”
But if nothing is nothing, then nothing has nothing that is less than it is.”
“하지만 아무것도 없는 게 진짜 아무것도 없는 거라면, 그보다 더 없는 건 있을 수 없어.”
“Oh, be quiet!” said the lamb. “Go play by yourself! I don’t play with pigs.”
“아유, 좀 조용히 해! 가서 혼자 놀라고! 난 돼지랑은 안 놀아.”
Sadly, Wilbur lay down and listened to the rain. Soon he saw the rat climbing down a slanting board that he used as a stairway.
슬퍼진 윌버는 자리에 누워 빗소리를 들었어요. 얼마 지나지 않아 윌버는 쥐 한 마리가 계단 대용으로 쓰는 비스듬한 널빤지를 타고 내려오는 걸 보았지요.
거위와 양에게 거절당해 낙심한 윌버의 시선이 이제 농장의 또 다른 주민인 쥐 템플턴에게로 향합니다.
“Will you play with me, Templeton?” asked Wilbur. “Play?” said Templeton, twirling his whiskers.
“나랑 같이 놀래, 템플턴?” 윌버가 물었어요. “놀자고?” 템플턴이 수염을 꼬며 말했어요.
저커먼 농장의 지하실에 사는 쥐 템플턴(Templeton)입니다. 자신의 이익과 먹을 것을 최우선으로 여기는 성격으로 묘사되며 이야기의 중요한 한 축을 담당하게 됩니다.
