“Hello...” “Ashley?” It was her father’s voice. “Oh, Father, I—” “What’s wrong?”

“I’m in Chicago and—” “What are you doing in Chicago?” “I can’t go into it now. I need an airline ticket to San Jose.”

“I don’t have any money with me. Can you help me?” “Of course. Hold on.”

Three minutes later, her father came back on the line. “There’s an American Airlines plane leaving O’Hare at ten-forty a.m., Flight 407.”
3분 뒤, 아버지가 다시 전화를 받았다. “오전 10시 40분에 오헤어 공항을 출발하는 아메리칸 항공 407편이 있다.”
OHare(오헤어) 공항은 시카고의 관문이자 세계에서 가장 붐비는 공항 중 하나입니다.
“There will be a ticket waiting for you at the check-in counter. I’ll pick you up at the airport in San Jose and—”
“체크인 카운터에 표를 맡겨두마. 내가 산호세 공항으로 마중을 나갈 테니까—”
“No!” She could not let him see her like this. “I’ll—I’ll go to my apartment to change.”
“아니요!” 이런 모습을 아버지에게 보일 수는 없었다. “제, 제 아파트로 가서 옷부터 갈아입을게요.”
“All right. I’ll come down and meet you for dinner. You can tell me all about it then.”
“알았다. 그럼 저녁에 그리로 가마. 그때 자세한 이야기를 들려다오.”
“Thank you, Father. Thank you.” On the plane going home, Ashley thought about the unforgivable thing Dennis Tibble had done to her.
“감사해요, 아버지. 정말 고마워요.” 집으로 돌아가는 비행기 안에서 애슐리는 데니스 티블이 자신에게 저지른 용서받지 못할 짓에 대해 생각했다.

“I’m going to have to go to the police,” she decided. “I can’t let him get away with this.”

“How many other women has he done this to?” When Ashley got back to her apartment, she felt as though she had returned to a sanctuary.

She could not wait to get out of the tacky outfit she was wearing. She stripped it off as quickly as she could.

She felt as though she needed another shower before she met her father. She started to walk over to her closet and stopped.
