so I went downstairs and watched a half-hour-long commercial that advertised an exercise machine.
아래층으로 내려가 운동기구를 광고하는 30분짜리 홈쇼핑 방송을 봤어.
당시 미국 심야 방송에서 흔히 볼 수 있었던 인포머셜(infomercial, 정보 제공형 광고)을 말합니다.
They kept flashing a 1-800 number, so I called it. The woman who picked up the other end of the phone was named Michelle.
화면에 무료 전화번호가 계속 깜빡이길래 전화를 걸어봤지. 전화를 받은 여자의 이름은 미셸이었어.
And I told Michelle that I was a kid and did not need an exercise machine, but I hoped she was having a good night.
난 미셸에게 난 아직 어린애라 운동기구는 필요 없지만, 즐거운 밤이 되길 바란다고 말해줬어.
That’s when Michelle hung up on me. And I didn’t mind a bit. Love always, Charlie.
그러자 미셸은 전화를 뚝 끊어버리더라고. 그래도 난 전혀 상관없었어. 항상 사랑을 담아, 찰리가.

약 2주가 흐른 뒤 작성된 3월 7일의 새로운 편지입니다.
I just can’t put it any other way. I have now gone on another date with Mary Elizabeth.
그냥 달리 표현할 방법이 없네. 난 이제 메리 엘리자베스와 또 한 번 데이트를 했어.
In a lot of ways, it was similar to the dance except that we got to wear more comfortable clothes.
여러 면에서 지난번 무도회랑 비슷했지만, 이번엔 좀 더 편한 옷을 입을 수 있었지.
She was the one who asked me out again, and I suppose that’s okay,
이번에도 메리 엘리자베스가 먼저 데이트 신청을 했는데, 뭐 그것도 나쁘진 않다고 생각해.
but I think I’m going to start doing the asking from time to time because I can’t always hope to get asked.
하지만 앞으로는 내가 가끔 데이트 신청을 해볼까 봐. 매번 신청이 오기만을 기다릴 순 없잖아.
Also, if I do the asking, then I’ll be sure to go out with the girl of my choice if she says yes.
게다가 내가 먼저 신청하면, 상대방이 수락했을 때 내가 정말 좋아하는 애랑 데이트를 할 수 있을 테니까.
It’s just so complicated. The good news is that I got to be the one who drove this time.
