We headed back the way we came, in the direction of the giant screen.

They’d just come out of the woods, doing stuff I’m sure they didn’t want their teachers to know about.
녀석들은 방금 숲에서 나오는 길이었는데, 보아하니 선생님들 몰래 뒤가 구린 짓을 하고 있었던 게 분명했다.
선생님들의 감시를 피해 금지된 장소에서 담배를 피우거나 폭죽을 터뜨리는 등, 이른바 노는 학생들과 마주쳤음을 알 수 있습니다.
I could smell the smoke now, the smell of both firecrackers and cigarettes. They pointed a flashlight at us.
이제는 연기 냄새가 확실히 났다. 폭죽과 담배 냄새가 섞인 냄새였다. 그들이 우리 쪽으로 손전등을 비추었다.
There were six of them: four boys and two girls. They looked like they were in the seventh grade.
그들은 남자애 넷에 여자애 둘, 모두 여섯 명이었다. 중학교 1학년이나 2학년쯤 되어 보였다.
“What school are you from?” one of the boys called out. “Beecher Prep!”
“너희 어느 학교에서 왔어?” 남자애 중 하나가 소리쳤다. “비처 중학교!”
Jack started to answer, when all of a sudden one of the girls started screaming.
잭이 대답하려던 찰나, 갑자기 여자애 중 한 명이 비명을 지르기 시작했다.
“Oh my God!” she shrieked, holding her hand over her eyes like she was crying.
“세상에!” 그녀가 마치 우는 사람처럼 손으로 눈을 가리며 날카롭게 소리쳤다.
I figured maybe a huge bug had just flown into her face or something.
나는 커다란 벌레라도 얼굴에 날아들었나 싶었다.
“No way!” one of the boys cried out, and he started flicking his hand in the air like he’d just touched something hot.
“말도 안 돼!” 남자애 하나가 외치더니, 뜨거운 무언가에 닿기라도 한 듯 허공에 손을 휘저어 댔다.
And then he covered his mouth. “No freakin’ way, man! No freakin’ way!”
그러더니 그는 입을 가렸다. “미친, 말도 안 돼! 야, 진짜 대박이다!”
freakin은 비속어를 다소 완곡하게 표현한 말입니다. 여기서는 아이들이 받은 무례한 충격을 거칠게 내뱉는 상황입니다.
