The sandstone cliffs were home to Buddhist monks who carved caves in them to use as living quarters and as sanctuary for weary traveling pilgrims.

The monks, Babi said, painted beautiful frescoes along the walls and roofs of their caves.

“At one point,” he said, “there were five thousand monks living as hermits in these caves.”

Tariq was badly out of breath when they reached the top. Babi was panting too. But his eyes shone with excitement.
정상에 다다랐을 때 타리크는 몹시 숨을 몰아쉬었다. 아빠 역시 헐떡였지만, 눈만큼은 흥분으로 빛나고 있었다.
“We're standing atop its head,” he said, wiping his brow with a handkerchief. “There's a niche over here where we can look out.”
“우리가 불상의 머리 꼭대기에 서 있구나.” 아빠가 손수건으로 이마를 닦으며 말했다. “여기 밖을 내다볼 수 있는 감실이 있단다.”
감실(niche)은 벽이나 절벽 등을 파서 불상 등을 모셔두는 움푹한 공간을 뜻합니다.
They inched over to the craggy overhang and, standing side by side, with Babi in the middle, gazed down on the valley.
그들은 울퉁불퉁하게 튀어나온 벼랑 끝으로 조심스레 다가갔다. 아빠를 가운데에 두고 나란히 서서 계곡 아래를 굽어보았다.
“Look at this!” said Laila. Babi smiled. The Bamiyan Valley below was carpeted by lush farming fields.
“이것 좀 보세요!” 라일라가 외쳤다. 아빠는 미소를 지었다. 발아래 펼쳐진 바미안 계곡은 푸른 농경지들로 뒤덮여 있었다.
Babi said they were green winter wheat and alfalfa, potatoes too.

The fields were bordered by poplars and crisscrossed by streams and irrigation ditches,
