Ellie and Brenda weren’t back by seven. Jess had finished all the picking and helped his mother can the beans.
7시가 되어도 엘리와 브렌다는 돌아오지 않았다. 제스는 콩 따기를 모두 마치고 엄마를 도와 콩 통조림 만드는 일을 도왔다.
앞서 콩밭에서 일하던 낮 시간이 지나고, 저녁 7시가 된 시점의 상황입니다.
She never canned except when it was scalding hot anyhow, and all the boiling turned the kitchen into some kind of hellhole.
엄마는 유독 날이 찌는 듯이 더울 때만 통조림을 만들곤 했는데, 콩을 삶는 열기 때문에 부엌은 마치 지옥 같은 구덩이로 변해버렸다.
hellhole은 지옥처럼 덥거나 불쾌해서 견디기 힘든 장소를 뜻합니다. 뜨거운 증기가 가득 찬 부엌의 고통스러운 분위기를 강조하고 있습니다.

“거기에 여섯 살이나 일곱 살 정도 된 여자애가 있었으면 좋겠다.” 메이 벨이 말했다. “같이 놀 사람이 필요하단 말이야.”
“You got Joyce Ann.” “I hate Joyce Ann. She’s nothing but a baby.”
“조이스 앤이 있잖아.” “조이스 앤은 싫어. 걘 그냥 아기일 뿐이잖아.”
Joyce Ann’s lip went out. They both watched it tremble. Then her pudgy body shuddered, and she let out a great cry.
