“Rolls,” said Calpurnia. “Estelle down at the hotel sent ‘em.”

Atticus looked up at her, puzzled, and she said, “You better step out here and see what’s in the kitchen, Mr. Finch.”

We followed him. The kitchen table was loaded with enough food to bury the family:

Calpurnia said, “This was all ‘round the back steps when I got here this morning.

They—they ’preciate what you did, Mr. Finch. They—they aren’t oversteppin’ themselves, are they?”

Atticus’s eyes filled with tears. He did not speak for a moment.
아빠의 눈에 눈물이 가득 고였다. 아빠는 잠시 동안 아무 말씀도 하지 못하셨다.
“Tell them I’m very grateful,” he said. “Tell them—tell them they must never do this again. Times are too hard…”
“정말 고맙다고 전해 주렴.” 아빠가 말씀하셨다. “그리고—그리고 다시는 이러지 말라고 전해 다오. 다들 너무나 힘든 시기 아니냐...”
선물을 거절하는 것이 아니라, 가난한 이들이 자신을 위해 무리해서 식량을 보내는 마음이 아파서 건네는 아빠의 배려 섞인 당부입니다.
He left the kitchen, went in the diningroom and excused himself to Aunt Alexandra, put on his hat and went to town.
아빠는 부엌을 나와 식당으로 가셔서 알렉산드라 고모에게 양해를 구하시고는, 모자를 쓰고 시내로 향하셨다.
We heard Dill’s step in the hall, so Calpurnia left Atticus’s uneaten breakfast on the table.
