“Why? It’s almost ten o’clock, Jem.” He knew it, but he was going anyway.

“Then I’m going with you. If you say no you’re not, I’m going anyway, hear?”
“그럼 나도 같이 가. 안 된다고 해도 난 갈 거야, 알겠어?”
Jem saw that he would have to fight me to keep me home,
오빠는 나를 집에 떼어놓으려면 한바탕 싸움을 벌여야 한다는 걸 깨달았다.
and I suppose he thought a fight would antagonize Aunty, so he gave in with little grace.
싸우는 소리가 나면 고모를 자극하게 될 거라고 생각했는지, 오빠는 마지못해 내 고집에 굴복했다.
I dressed quickly. We waited until Aunty’s light went out, and we walked quietly down the back steps.
나는 재빨리 옷을 갈아입었다. 우리는 고모 방의 불이 꺼지기를 기다렸다가 살금살금 뒷계단을 내려갔다.
There was no moon tonight. “Dill’ll want to come,” I whispered.
그날 밤은 달도 뜨지 않았다. “딜도 같이 가고 싶어 할 텐데.” 내가 속삭였다.
“So he will,” said Jem gloomily. We leaped over the driveway wall,
“분명 그렇겠지.” 오빠가 침울하게 말했다. 우리는 진입로 담장을 뛰어넘었다.
cut through Miss Rachel’s side yard and went to Dill’s window. Jem whistled bob-white.
레이첼 아주머니네 옆마당을 가로질러 딜의 창문으로 향했다. 오빠가 메추라기 울음소리로 휘파람을 불었다.
bob-white(메추라기)는 울음소리가 bob-white처럼 들린다고 해서 붙여진 이름입니다. 아이들이 서로를 몰래 불러낼 때 쓰는 신호음입니다.
Dill’s face appeared at the screen, disappeared, and five minutes later he unhooked the screen and crawled out.
방충망 너머로 딜의 얼굴이 나타났다가 사라지더니, 5분 뒤에 그가 방충망 고리를 풀고 기어 나왔다.
An old campaigner, he did not speak until we were on the sidewalk.
노련한 활동가인 딜은 우리가 인도에 다다를 때까지 입을 열지 않았다.
old campaigner는 산전수전 다 겪은 노련한 사람을 뜻합니다. 딜이 여러 번 가출하고 몰래 빠져나가는 데 아주 익숙해져 있음을 재치 있게 표현했습니다.
“What’s up?” “Jem’s got the look-arounds,” an affliction Calpurnia said all boys caught at his age.
“무슨 일이야?” “젬 오빠가 ‘두리번 증후군’에 걸렸어.” 캘퍼니아 아주머니 말로는 그 또래 남자애들이라면 다 겪는 병이란다.
“I’ve just got this feeling,” Jem said, “just this feeling.”
“그냥 느낌이 좀 안 좋아.” 오빠가 말했다. “그냥 그런 기분이 들어.”
