Every afternoon, when the school bus stopped in front of her house, she jumped out and ran to the kitchen to fix another bottle for him.
매일 오후 스쿨버스가 집 앞에 서면 펀은 버스에서 뛰어 내려 주방으로 달려가 윌버를 위한 우유를 한 병 더 준비했답니다.
She fed him again at suppertime, and again just before going to bed.
저녁 시간에도 먹이를 주었고, 잠들기 직전에도 다시 한번 윌버를 챙겼어요.
Mrs. Arable gave him a feeding around noontime each day, when Fern was away in school.
펀이 학교에 가고 없는 점심 무렵에는 엄마가 대신 우유를 먹여 주셨지요.
Wilbur loved his milk, and he was never happier than when Fern was warming up a bottle for him. He would stand and gaze up at her with adoring eyes.
윌버는 우유를 정말 좋아했어요. 펀이 우유를 데워 줄 때가 가장 행복했지요. 윌버는 사랑이 가득 담긴 눈으로 펀을 가만히 올려다보곤 했답니다.
For the first few days of his life, Wilbur was allowed to live in a box near the stove in the kitchen.
태어난 지 처음 며칠 동안 윌버는 주방 난로 근처에 있는 상자에서 지냈어요.
당시 농가에서 주방 난로 주변은 집안에서 가장 따뜻한 곳이었습니다. 연약하게 태어난 윌버를 이곳에 둔 것은 생존을 돕기 위한 배려입니다.
Then, when Mrs. Arable complained, he was moved to a bigger box in the woodshed.
그러다 엄마가 조금 불편해하시자 나무 창고에 있는 더 큰 상자로 옮겨졌지요.
At two weeks of age, he was moved outdoors. It was apple-blossom time, and the days were getting warmer.
생후 2주가 되었을 때 윌버는 실외로 거처를 옮겼어요. 사과꽃이 피고 날이 점점 따뜻해지던 때였답니다.
Mr. Arable fixed a small yard specially for Wilbur under an apple tree, and gave him a large wooden box full of straw,
아빠는 사과나무 아래에 윌버를 위한 작은 울타리를 만들어 주셨고, 짚을 가득 채운 커다란 나무 상자도 놓아 주셨어요.
with a doorway cut in it so he could walk in and out as he pleased.
상자에는 윌버가 마음대로 드나들 수 있도록 출입구도 만들어 주셨답니다.
“Won’t he be cold at night?” asked Fern. “No,” said her father. “You watch and see what he does.”
“밤에 춥지는 않을까요?” 펀이 묻자 아빠가 대답하셨어요. “걱정 마라. 윌버가 어떻게 하는지 한번 보렴.”
Carrying a bottle of milk, Fern sat down under the apple tree inside the yard.
우유병을 든 펀은 울타리 안 사과나무 아래에 자리를 잡고 앉았어요.
Wilbur ran to her and she held the bottle for him while he sucked.
윌버가 달려오자 펀은 윌버가 우유를 다 빨아 먹을 때까지 병을 꼭 잡아 주었지요.
