“Clauwn!” says the three-year-old, pointing happily at the sign.
“광대다!” 세 살짜리 아이가 안내판을 가리키며 즐거워했다.
“Do you know you have to pay them here to go to the bathroom?” Ove exclaims incredulously.
“여기 화장실 가는데 돈을 내야 한다는 거 알아?” 오베가 도저히 믿기지 않는다는 듯 소리치며 나타났다.
스웨덴을 포함한 많은 유럽 국가에서는 병원이나 역 같은 공공장소의 화장실 이용 시에도 일정 금액을 지불해야 하는 문화가 흔합니다.
Parvaneh spins around and gives Ove a harassed look.
파르바네가 몸을 홱 돌려 오베를 지긋지긋하다는 듯 쳐다보았다.
“Do you need change?” Ove looks offended. “Why would I need change?”
“잔돈 필요하세요?” 오베가 불쾌하다는 표정을 지었다. “잔돈은 왜?”
“For the bathroom?” “I don’t need to go to the bathroom.”
“화장실 가시려고요.” “난 화장실 갈 생각 없어.”
“But you said—” she begins, then stops herself and shakes her head.
“방금 말씀하셔 놓고는...” 그녀는 말을 하려다 말고 고개를 절레절레 저었다.
“Forget it, just forget it... When does the parking meter run out?” she asks instead.
“아니에요, 됐어요. 그냥 잊어버리세요... 주차 시간 언제 끝나요?” 그녀가 대신 물었다.
“Ten minutes.” She groans. “Don’t you understand it’ll take longer than ten minutes?”
“10분 남았어.” 그녀가 신음 섞인 소리를 냈다. “10분보다 훨씬 더 걸릴 거라는 거 모르세요?”
“In that case I’ll go out and feed the meter in ten minutes,” says Ove, as if this was quite obvious.
“그럼 10분 뒤에 나가서 돈을 더 넣으면 되잖아.” 오베는 그게 너무나 당연하다는 듯이 말했다.
오베에게 주차비를 미리 넉넉히 내는 것은 쓰지도 않을 시간을 위해 돈을 낭비하는 일이라, 앞서 언급된 그의 원칙(ID 1866)에 정면으로 위배되는 일입니다.
“Why don’t you just pay for longer and save yourself the bother?” she asks
“그냥 애초에 넉넉하게 내고 번거로운 일 안 만들면 안 돼요?” 그녀가 물었다.
and looks like she wishes she hadn’t as soon as the question crosses her lips.
그녀는 질문을 내뱉자마자 아차 싶은 표정을 지었다.
“Because that’s exactly what they want! They’re not getting a load of money for time we might not even use!”
“그게 바로 저놈들이 바라는 거니까! 우리가 쓰지도 않을 시간까지 계산해서 저놈들 배를 불려줄 순 없지!”
