“Really?” said the little prince. “Really. Clap your hands,” said the man.
“정말요?” 어린 왕자가 물었어요. “그렇고말고. 자, 손뼉을 쳐 보렴.” 그 남자가 말했어요.
The little prince clapped his hands and the man moved his hat with a small touch.
어린 왕자가 손뼉을 치자, 남자는 모자를 살짝 들어 올리며 답례를 했어요.
“This is more fun than the visit to the king,” the little prince said to himself.
‘왕을 만났을 때보다 훨씬 더 재미있네.’ 어린 왕자는 속으로 생각했지요.
And he clapped his hands again and again. The man touched his hat again and again.
어린 왕자는 계속해서 손뼉을 쳤고, 남자는 그때마다 모자에 손을 대며 인사를 했어요.
After five minutes of this exercise the little prince started to be tired of this game.
5분 정도 이런 연습이 계속되자 어린 왕자는 이 놀이가 조금 지겨워지기 시작했답니다.
“Do you only touch your hat or do you also take it off?” he asked.
“모자에 손을 대기만 하시는 건가요, 아니면 모자를 벗기도 하시나요?” 어린 왕자가 물었어요.
But the man didn’t hear him. This type of people never hear anything.
하지만 남자는 그 말을 듣지 못했어요. 이런 부류의 사람들은 자기를 찬양하는 말 외에는 아무것도 듣지 않거든요.
허영심에 빠진 이들이 타인의 말에 귀를 닫고 오직 자신을 향한 찬사만을 기다리는 독특한 심리 상태를 묘사합니다.
They hear only when somebody admires them. “Do you really admire me very much?” he asked the little prince.
그들은 오직 누군가 자기를 찬양할 때만 귀를 기울인답니다. “너는 정말로 나를 그토록 찬양하니?” 그가 어린 왕자에게 물었어요.

그가 어린 왕자에게 묻자, 어린 왕자가 되물었어요. “찬양한다는 게 무슨 뜻인가요?”
“To admire means to believe that I am the most handsome, the best dressed, the richest and the most intelligent man on the planet.”
“찬양한다는 건 내가 이 별에서 가장 잘생기고, 가장 옷을 잘 입고, 가장 부유하며, 가장 똑똑한 사람이라고 믿어주는 것이지.”
이 인물에게 찬양(admire)이란 실제 모습과는 상관없이 타인보다 우월하다는 것을 무조건적으로 인정받는 행위임을 알 수 있습니다.
“But you are the only man on your planet!” “Yes, I know that I’m the only man on this planet, but please admire me.”
“하지만 이 별에는 아저씨밖에 없잖아요!” “그래, 나도 알고 있단다. 하지만 그냥 나를 찬양해 주렴.”
“I admire you,” said the little prince, “but I don’t understand why this is so important to you.”
“아저씨를 찬양해요.” 어린 왕자가 말했어요. “하지만 왜 이게 아저씨한테 그토록 중요한 건지 이해가 안 가요.”
