There are also hundreds of other planets which are sometimes so small that it’s difficult to see them through the telescope.

When an astronomer discovers one of them, he doesn’t give the planet a name, but only a number. He calls it, for example, Asteroid 3251.
천문학자가 그런 행성을 발견하면 이름 대신 번호를 붙여주곤 해요. 예를 들어 ‘소행성 3251호’처럼 부르는 식이죠.
실제 천문학계에서 무수히 많은 소행성을 식별하기 위해 발견 순서에 따라 고유 번호를 부여하는 관습을 반영한 설정입니다.

I believe that the planet from which the little prince came is Asteroid B-612.
나는 어린 왕자가 온 별이 소행성 B-612호라고 굳게 믿고 있어요.
This asteroid was seen only once through the telescope. It was by a Turkish astronomer, in 1909.
이 소행성은 1909년에 어느 터키 천문학자가 망원경으로 딱 한 번 발견한 적이 있었죠.
여기서부터는 소행성 B-612호가 세상에 알려진 과정을 통해 인간의 고정관념과 편견을 풍자하는 일화가 시작됩니다.

He spoke about his discovery at the International Astronomical Congress.
그는 국제 천문 학회에서 자신이 발견한 사실을 발표했어요.
But nobody believed him because he was wearing Turkish clothes. Adults do such things.
하지만 그가 터키 옷을 입고 있었다는 이유로 아무도 그의 말을 믿지 않았답니다. 어른들이란 원래 그런 법이니까요.
실력이나 진실보다는 외양이나 복장 같은 형식적인 요소로 사람을 판단하는 어른들의 모순을 날카롭게 꼬집고 있습니다.

Fortunately for the reputation of Asteroid B-612, a Turkish leader made a law that people had to wear clothes like Europeans.
다행히 소행성 B-612호의 명성을 위해 터키의 한 통치자가 국민들에게 유럽식 옷을 입으라는 엄격한 법을 만들었어요.
The astronomer spoke about his discovery again in 1920. He was wearing very elegant clothes. And this time everybody accepted his discovery.
그 천문학자는 1920년에 아주 우아한 옷을 입고 다시 발표를 했고, 그제야 모든 사람이 그의 발견을 인정해주었답니다.
