제6장 – 나무들
So I thought that on the planet where the little prince lived, there were, as on all planets, good plants and bad plants.
나는 어린 왕자가 살던 별에도 다른 모든 별과 마찬가지로 좋은 식물과 나쁜 식물이 있을 거라고 생각했어요.
좋은 씨앗과 나쁜 씨앗의 대비를 통해, 일상의 작은 습관이나 마음가짐이 가져오는 결과에 대해 비유적으로 설명합니다.
And there were also good seeds of good plants and bad seeds of bad plants.
당연히 좋은 식물에게서는 좋은 씨앗이, 나쁜 식물에게서는 나쁜 씨앗이 나오겠지요.
But we can’t see seeds. They sleep deep in the ground until one of them wants to wake up.
하지만 씨앗은 눈에 보이지 않아요. 그 중 하나가 잠에서 깨고 싶어 할 때까지 땅속 깊은 곳에서 잠을 자고 있죠.
Then it begins to grow slowly to the sun. When it’s very small, you don’t know if it is a carrot seed or a rose seed.
그러다 태양을 향해 아주 천천히 자라기 시작해요. 처음 아주 작을 때는 이게 당근 씨앗인지 장미 씨앗인지 알 수 없답니다.
And you can let it grow as it wants. But if it is a bad plant, it is necessary to destroy the plant immediately, when you can see it.
만약 유익한 식물이라면 마음껏 자라게 둬도 상관없어요. 하지만 나쁜 식물이라는 걸 알게 된다면, 눈에 띄는 즉시 뿌리째 뽑아버려야 해요.
And the truth was that there were some terrible seeds on the planet of the little prince.
그런데 어린 왕자의 별에는 아주 무시무시한 씨앗들이 있었답니다.
These were the seeds of baobabs. The ground of the planet was full of them.
그것은 바로 바오바브나무의 씨앗이었어요. 그 별의 땅속은 온통 그 씨앗들로 가득했죠.
If you see a baobab too late, you will never be able to destroy it.
만약 바오바브나무를 너무 늦게 발견한다면, 절대로 없앨 수 없게 돼요.
It will go over the whole planet. Its roots will go right through it.
나무가 온 별을 뒤덮고, 그 뿌리가 별을 송두리째 뚫고 지나가 버릴 테니까요.
And if the planet is too small, and if there are many baobabs, they will tear the planet to pieces.
게다가 별은 너무 작은데 바오바브나무가 너무 많아지면, 결국 별은 산산조각이 나고 만답니다.
