and they rolld me out of the room and down the hall to the door that says sergery.
그리고 나를 방 밖으로 밀고 나가 복도를 지나 ‘수술실’이라고 적힌 문으로 데려갔다.
Boy was I serprised that it was a big room with green walls and lots of docters sitting around up high all around the room waching the operashun.
수술실은 초록색 벽으로 된 큰 방이었는데, 수술을 지켜보려고 방 안 높은 곳에 많은 의사들이 둘러앉아 있는 걸 보고 깜짝 놀랐다.
예전 의학 교육 현장에서는 수술실을 극장처럼 설계하여 의대생이나 연구자들이 높은 곳에서 수술 장면을 참관하도록 하곤 했습니다. 찰리는 이 낯선 광경을 보고 마치 연극 무대를 보는 듯한 기분을 느낀 모양입니다.
I dint no it was going to be like a show. A man came up to the tabel all in wite and with a wite cloth on his face like in TV shows and rubber glovs
무슨 쇼를 하는 곳 같았다. TV 쇼에서 본 것처럼 온통 하얀 옷을 입고 얼굴에는 하얀 천을 두른 사람이 고무장갑을 끼고 수술대 앞으로 다가왔다.
and he said rilax Charlie its me Dr Strauss. I said hi doc Im skared.
그가 말했다. “찰리, 긴장 푸세요. 나 스트라우스 박사입니다.” 나도 인사했다. “박사님, 안녕하세요. 저 너무 무서워요.”
He said theres nothing to be skared about Charlie he said youll just go to sleep.
그가 말했다. “찰리, 무서워할 것 없어요. 그냥 잠들기만 하면 됩니다.”
I said thats what Im skared about. He patted my head and then 2 other men waring wite masks too came and straped my arms and legs down
나는 바로 그게 무서운 거라고 대답했다. 박사는 내 머리를 토닥여 주었고, 곧이어 하얀 마스크를 쓴 다른 남자 두 명이 더 오더니 내 팔다리를 묶었다.
수술 중 환자의 움직임을 방지하기 위한 조치이지만, 찰리에게는 앞서 앨저넌이 실험 기구에 고정되었던 장면을 연상시키는 공포의 순간이기도 합니다.
so I coudnt move them and that maid me very skared and my stomack feeled tite like I was gone to make all over
꼼짝도 할 수 없게 되자 너무 무서웠고, 속이 울렁거려서 당장이라도 큰일을 저지를 것만 같았다.
but I dint only wet a littel and I was gone to cry but they put a rubber thing on my face for me to breeth in and it smelld funny.
다행히 실수를 조금 했을 뿐이었다. 눈물이 나올 것 같았지만, 그들이 숨을 쉴 수 있게 내 얼굴에 고무로 된 무언가를 씌웠고 거기서 이상한 냄새가 났다.
All the time I herd Dr Strauss talking out loud about the operashun telling evrybody what he was gonna do. But I dint understand anything about it
스트라우스 박사가 수술에 대해 큰 소리로 말하며 사람들에게 자신이 무엇을 할 것인지 설명하는 소리가 계속 들렸다. 하지만 나는 그게 무슨 소리인지 하나도 이해하지 못했다.
and I was thinking mabye after the operashun Ill be smart and Ill understand all the things hes talking about.
수술이 끝나고 나면 나도 똑똑해져서 박사가 말하는 것들을 다 알아듣게 될까 생각했다.
So I breethed deep and then I gess I was very tired becase I went to sleep.
나는 숨을 깊게 들이마셨고, 아주 피곤했는지 그대로 잠이 들었다.
