기도가 관광객들에게 설명하고 있는 이 폐허(edifice)는 바로 1장에서 묘사되었던, 현재 모모가 살고 있는 그 원형 극장을 가리킵니다. 자신이 서 있는 장소를 이야기의 무대로 끌어들이는 기도의 재치가 엿보입니다.

“하모니카 여왕은 점점 나랏일을 돌보지 않게 되었습니다. 그것은 ‘염소와 닭’ 부족이 간절히 기다려 온 기회였지요.”

mists of time은 세월의 안개라는 뜻으로, 아주 오래전 일이라 사실 여부가 불분명한 상황을 비유하는 문학적인 표현입니다.
