“너희가 만든 벽보와 플래카드는 정말 인상적이었어.” “그걸 다 읽어 보셨나요?” 모모가 기뻐서 물었다.
여기서 언급된 벽보와 플래카드는 앞서 모모와 기도가 다른 친구들과 함께 회색 신사들의 정체를 알리기 위해 준비했던 대대적인 시위 활동을 가리킵니다.
″Every last word,″ the professor assured her. ″Nobody else did, from the look of it,″ said Momo.
“한 글자도 빠짐없이 다 읽었단다.” 박사가 확신을 주며 말했다. “제가 보기엔 박사님 말고는 아무도 안 읽는 것 같았는데.” 모모가 말했다.
The professor nodded sympathetically. ″I'm afraid not. The men in gray saw to that.″
박사는 안쓰러운 듯 고개를 끄덕였다. “안타깝게도 그렇구나. 회색 신사들이 손을 썼기 때문이지.”
″Do you know them well?″ Momo asked. He nodded again and sighed. ″As well as they know me,″ he said.
“그들을 잘 아시나요?” 모모가 물었다. 그는 다시 고개를 끄덕이며 한숨을 내쉬었다. “그들이 나를 아는 만큼 잘 알고 있단다.”
Momo didn't know what to make of this reply. ″Do you often go to see them?″
모모는 이 대답을 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 몰랐다. “그들을 자주 만나러 가시나요?”
″No, never. I never set foot outside this house.″ ″What about the men in gray - do they ever come here?″
“아니, 한 번도 간 적 없단다. 난 이 집 밖으로는 발걸음도 떼지 않거든.” “그럼 회색 신사들은요? 그들이 여기에 오기도 하나요?”
The professor smiled. ″Never fear, Momo, they can't get in.
박사가 미소를 지었다. “걱정 말거라, 모모야. 그들은 안으로 들어올 수 없단다.”
They couldn't even if they knew the way to Never Lane, which they don't.″
“그들이 ‘결코 아님 골목’으로 오는 길을 안다고 해도 들어올 수 없어. 물론 길조차 모르지만 말이다.”
Never Lane(결코 아님 골목)은 앞서 모모가 거북을 따라 뒷걸음질로 들어왔던 신비로운 골목의 이름입니다. 현실의 물리 법칙이 통하지 않는 특별한 구역임을 상기시켜 줍니다.
Momo thought a while. Though reassured by Professor Hora's remarks, she was eager to learn more about him.
모모는 잠시 생각에 잠겼다. 호라 박사의 말에 안심이 되긴 했지만, 그에 대해 더 알고 싶은 마음이 간절했다.
″How do you come to know all this,″ she asked, ″- I mean, about our posters and the men in gray?″
“이 모든 걸 어떻게 다 아시는 건가요?” 모모가 물었다. “그러니까 저희 벽보나 회색 신사들에 대한 것들 말이에요.”
″I keep a constant watch on them and everything connected with them,″ the professor told her,
“난 항상 그들과 그들에 관한 모든 것을 지켜보고 있단다.” 박사가 모모에게 일러 주었다.
