호흡 정지로 소생 치료를 받았던 여성의 일화로 장면이 전환됩니다. 본인이 죽어가는 과정을 제3자처럼 지켜보는 묘한 상황이 시작되네요.
and was carried to the emergency room, where a resuscitation attempt was made.
I saw them resuscitating me. It was really strange.
“의료진이 저를 살리려고 애쓰는 모습이 보였어요. 정말 이상한 기분이었죠.”
I wasn’t very high; it was almost like I was on a pedestal, but not above them to any great extent, just maybe looking over them.
“그렇게 높은 곳은 아니었어요. 마치 발판 위에 올라선 것처럼 그들보다 약간 높은 위치에서 내려다보는 정도였죠.”
pedestal은 조각상을 세우는 받침대를 뜻합니다. 의료진이 환자를 살리려 분주하게 움직이는 머리 위로 아주 살짝 떠 있는 자신의 상태를 표현한 것이죠.
I tried talking to them but nobody could hear me, nobody would listen to me.
“사람들에게 말을 걸어 보았지만 아무도 제 목소리를 듣지 못했고, 제 말에 귀를 기울여 주지도 않았습니다.”
To complicate the fact that he is apparently inaudible to people around him,
주변 사람들에게 자신의 목소리가 들리지 않는다는 사실에 더해,
the person in a spiritual body soon finds that he is also invisible to others.
영체 상태의 체험자는 곧 자신이 타인의 눈에 보이지도 않는다는 사실을 알게 된다.
The medical personnel or others congregating around his physical body may look straight towards where he is, in his spiritual body,
자신의 육체 주위에 모여 있는 의료진이나 사람들은 영체 상태인 그가 있는 곳을 똑바로 쳐다보면서도,
without giving the slightest sign of ever seeing him.
그를 보았다는 기색을 전혀 내비치지 않는다.
His spiritual body also lacks solidity; physical objects in the environment appear to move through it with ease,
영체는 고체성 또한 결여되어 있다. 주변의 물리적 대상들은 영체를 그대로 통과하는 듯하며,
and he is unable to get a grip on any object or person he tries to touch.
체험자는 그 어떤 물체나 사람을 붙잡으려 해도 그럴 수 없음을 깨닫는다.
The doctors and nurses were pounding on my body to try to get IV’s started and to get me back,
“의사와 간호사들이 정맥 주사를 놓고 저를 살려내려고 제 몸을 두드리고 있었어요.”
pounding on my body는 긴박한 심폐소생술(CPR) 도중 가슴을 강하게 압박하는 행위를 말합니다. 육체는 고통받고 있지만, 영체는 그저 자신을 내버려 두길 바라는 아이러니한 순간입니다.
