And that’s why it’s so hard to tell you this. I have to describe it to you in words that are three-dimensional.

That’s as close as I can get to it, but it’s not really adequate. I can’t really give you a complete picture.

HEARING THE NEWS
사망 소식을 듣다
Numerous people have told of hearing their doctors or other spectators in effect pronounce them dead.
수많은 사람이 자신의 사망을 선고하는 의사나 주변 사람들의 말을 실제로 들었다고 증언해 왔다.
One woman related to me that, I was in the hospital, but they didn’t know what was wrong with me.
한 여성은 필자에게 다음과 같이 말했다. “병원에 입원해 있었지만, 의료진은 제 몸에 어떤 문제가 있는지 알아내지 못했어요.”
So Dr. James, my doctor, sent me downstairs to the radiologist for a liver scan so they could find out.
“그래서 담당 의사인 제임스 박사님은 원인을 찾으려고 저를 아래층 방사선과로 내려보내 간 스캔을 받게 했죠.”
First, they tested this drug they were going to use on my arm, since I had a lot of drug allergies.
“제가 약물 알레르기가 심해서, 먼저 팔에 사용할 약물을 소량 테스트했어요.”
But there was no reaction, so they went ahead. When they used it this time, I arrested on them.
“별다른 반응이 없어서 검사를 진행했는데, 그때 갑자기 심정지가 왔나 봐요.”
arrested는 의학 용어인 cardiac arrest(심정지)를 짧게 표현한 것입니다. 평온하던 검사실이 순식간에 비상 상황으로 변했음을 짐작할 수 있습니다.
I heard the radiologist who was working on me go over to the telephone, and I heard very clearly as he dialed it.
“저를 검사하던 방사선과 의사가 전화기로 달려가더니 번호를 누르는 소리가 아주 또렷하게 들렸어요.”
I heard him say, “Dr. James, I’ve killed your patient, Mrs. Martin.”
“그가 ‘제임스 박사님, 제가 환자를 죽였습니다. 마틴 부인이 사망했습니다’라고 말하는 소리를 들었죠.”
의학적 사망 판정을 받은 뒤에도 청각은 가장 마지막까지 남아있다는 학설을 뒷받침하는 흥미로운 보고입니다. 본인이 죽었다는 말을 직접 듣는 기분은 어떨지 짐작조차 하기 어렵군요.
And I knew I wasn’t dead. I tried to move or to let them know, but I couldn’t.
“하지만 저는 제가 죽지 않았다는 걸 알고 있었어요. 몸을 움직이거나 제가 살아있다는 걸 알리려 애썼지만 그럴 수 없었죠.”
When they were trying to resuscitate me, I could hear them telling how many c.c.’s of something to give me,
“의료진이 저를 살리려 할 때, 어떤 약물을 몇 cc 투여하라고 지시하는 소리도 들렸어요.”
