“It's all so long ago,” she added, stuffing more crisps into her mouth. “Ah yes, I can remember one. Here's what happened.”
“다 너무 옛날 일이야.” 그녀는 감자 칩을 입안 가득 밀어 넣으며 덧붙였다. “아, 맞아, 하나 생각난다. 이런 일이 있었지.”
“I chose a time when I knew the Trunchbull was out of the way teaching the sixth-formers, and I put up my hand and asked to go to the bogs.”
“트런치불이 6학년들을 가르치느라 자리를 비운 틈을 타서, 손을 들고 화장실에 가겠다고 했어.”
Bogs는 영국에서 화장실을 뜻하는 속어입니다. 호텐시아의 거친 성격이 말투에서도 잘 드러납니다.
“But instead of going there, I sneaked into the Trunchbull's room. And after a speedy search I found the drawer where she kept all her gym knickers.”
“하지만 화장실로 가는 대신 트런치불의 방으로 몰래 잠입했지. 재빨리 뒤져서 그 여자가 체육용 속바지를 보관해 두는 서랍을 찾아냈어.”
“Go on,” Matilda said, spellbound. “What happened next?”
“그래서?” 마틸다가 이야기에 완전히 빠져들어 물었다. “그다음에 어떻게 됐어?”
“I had sent away by post, you see, for this very powerful itching-powder,” Hortensia said. “It cost 50p a packet and was called The Skin-Scorcher.”
“미리 우편으로 주문해 둔 아주 강력한 가려움 유발 가루가 있었거든.” 호텐시아가 말했다. “한 봉지에 50펜스였는데 이름이 ‘살가죽 태우는 약’이었지.”
“The label said it was made from the powdered teeth of deadly snakes, and it was guaranteed to raise welts the size of walnuts on your skin.”
“라벨에는 독사의 이빨을 갈아 만들었다고 적혀 있었고, 피부에 호두만 한 두드러기가 돋는다는 걸 보장한다고 되어 있었어.”
“So I sprinkled this stuff inside every pair of knickers in the drawer and then folded them all up again carefully.”
“그래서 서랍 안에 있는 모든 속바지에 그 가루를 뿌려 놓고 다시 조심스럽게 접어 놨지.”
Hortensia paused to cram more crisps into her mouth. “Did it work?” Lavender asked.
호텐시아는 잠시 멈추고 감자 칩을 입안에 더 쑤셔 넣었다. “효과가 있었어?” 라벤더가 물었다.
“Well,” Hortensia said, “a few days later, during prayers, the Trunchbull suddenly started scratching herself like mad down below.”
“글쎄,” 호텐시아가 말했다. “며칠 뒤 조회 시간이었어. 트런치불이 갑자기 밑부분을 미친 듯이 긁어 대기 시작하더라고.”
“A-ha, I said to myself. Here we go. She's changed for gym already.”
“‘아하,’ 나는 속으로 생각했지. ‘드디어 시작이군. 벌써 체육복으로 갈아입었나 보네.’”
“It was pretty wonderful to be sitting there watching it all and knowing that I was the only person in the whole school”
“그 광경을 지켜보면서 전교에서 오직 나만이 트런치불의 바지 속에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는지”
“who realised exactly what was going on inside the Trunchbull's pants.”
