“Who is it?” the woman said, not looking round. “Some school teacher,” Mr Wormwood said. “She says she's got to talk to us about Matilda.”
“누구예요?” 여자가 뒤도 돌아보지 않고 물었다. “무슨 학교 선생이라나 봐.” 웜우드 씨가 대답했다. “마틸다에 대해서 할 말이 있다더군.”
He crossed to the TV set and turned down the sound but left the picture on the screen.
그는 텔레비전 앞으로 다가가 화면은 그대로 둔 채 소리만 줄였다.
“Don't do that, Harry!” Mrs Wormwood cried out. “Willard is just about to propose to Angelica!”
“그러지 말아요, 해리!” 웜우드 부인이 소리쳤다. “윌러드가 안젤리카한테 막 청혼하려는 참이란 말이에요!”
“You can still watch it while we're talking,” Mr Wormwood said. “This is Matilda's teacher.”
“얘기하는 동안 그냥 보고 있어도 되오.” 웜우드 씨가 말했다. “이쪽은 마틸다의 담임 선생이라오.”
“She says she's got some sort of news to give us.” “My name is Jennifer Honey,” Miss Honey said. “How do you do, Mrs Wormwood.”
“우리에게 전해 줄 소식이 있다고 하더군.” “제니퍼 허니라고 합니다.” 허니 선생님이 말했다. “처음 뵙겠습니다, 웜우드 부인.”
Mrs Wormwood glared at her and said, “What's the trouble then?”
웜우드 부인은 선생님을 노려보며 말했다. “그래서, 대체 뭐가 문제인데요?”
Nobody invited Miss Honey to sit down so she chose a chair and sat down anyway.
아무도 자리를 권하지 않았기에, 허니 선생님은 스스로 의자를 골라 그냥 앉아 버렸다.
“This”, she said, “was your daughter's first day at school.”
“오늘은,” 선생님이 말을 시작했다. “따님에게 학교에서의 첫날이었습니다.”
“We know that,” Mrs Wormwood said, ratty about missing her programme. “Is that all you came to tell us?”
“우리도 알아요.” 프로그램을 놓친 것에 짜증이 난 부인이 톡 쏘아붙였다. “고작 그 소리를 하러 여기까지 온 거예요?”
Miss Honey stared hard into the other woman's wet grey eyes,
허니 선생님은 상대의 눅눅한 회색 눈을 뚫어지게 쳐다보았다.
and she allowed the silence to hang in the air until Mrs Wormwood became uncomfortable.
선생님은 부인이 불편함을 느낄 때까지 잠시 동안 침묵이 흐르게 두었다.
“Do you wish me to explain why I came?” she said. “Get on with it then,” Mrs Wormwood said.
“제가 왜 왔는지 설명을 들어 보시겠습니까?” 선생님의 물음에 웜우드 부인이 대답했다. “그럼 어서 말이나 해 봐요.”
